Pros

Great learning environment with plenty of opportunities to gain experience with engineering design, manufacturing, and testing of proof-of-concept prototypes.

Cons

The onus is put on the intern to take initiative for further learning. This isn't necessarily a con, but some improvements could be made for better organizing students' responsibilities to ensure a balanced learning environment.

Pros

Welcoming workplace and flexible hours with summer classes.

The workshop would get a bit too hot at times.

Pros

There's no real structure to an internship at the Tech Toybox. This means the intern can work on whatever they feel one day, and something your supervisor needs you working on the next. The technical staff, particularly Dr. Davidson, are a wealth of knowledge, if busy at times. There's a bevy of useful technical skills you can pick up while working here, but only if you take the initiative to learn them. Hours are very flexible, and they are more than happy to work with your schedule.

Cons

The lack of structure could be viewed as a negative - without any real structure there's little direction. Interns who work on a project may not end up finishing it, as others may work on it while you're out. During my time at TTB, there was a surplus of interns, and management wasn't entirely sure what to do with us all, so some days we ended up making work for ourselves or just trying to help around the shop. If you aim to accomplish something here, you must be the one to take the initiative to do it, as nobody else is going to force you to do so. The internship is unpaid, but the primary reason you'd come here is for the experience in the first place.
