Pros
I leaned a LOT working at the Y. Sometimes that means learning what not to do as a supervisor and by learning, I mean taught myself the ropes because not a single person has time to train supervisors on how to properly do their job.
Cons
It's all in who you know. I am not saying this as a bitter ex-employee...I am saying this in truth. If you are not in with the right big dogs, you are out. It is that simple. It's sad because there are a lot of people who are GREAT people who work at they Y, but are kept down, pushed out or demoted because they aren't in with the right people. That is no way to run a business. If you aren't in it for the money (it's non-profit, so of course not) and you're not in it for the mission, then you're in it for the power.
