Toxic work environment, lack of clear chain of command, no focus or clear mission - Anonymous employee ThisWeek Community News Employee Review

Pros

Flexible schedule. Great co-workers working very hard for very little and are itching to get out. It's basically a placeholder job for when you need time to look for a better job. The only reason I have stayed as long as I have is because of the flexibility of being able to work remotely which is often also a curse.

Cons

Extremely toxic work environment. No opportunity for personal growth. No opportunity for advancement. No perks, no wellness program. Management cares about the bottom line and doesn't care how many people they step on to make $$. Gender/cultural inequality. Not a military-friendly employer. No programs for veterans. No allowance for veterans to go to VA appointments without being forced to take PTO and the fact that you are absent often results in retribution. Health Insurance goes up, taxes go up & no cost-of-living increase in years. No real raises in years "but you should be thankful to have a job" which I am not as I can't earn enough to meet my family's basic needs. Lack of positive influence and support by management. Intrusive emails are sent all hours of the day and night and on weekends. Staff are discouraged, undervalued and management generally doesn't know their staff's strengths & how to use them. Management lacks boundaries and flexibility. Micromanagement is rampant and encouraged. Many of us are rewarded with verbal abuse or embarrassment in front of peers whether in-person over the phone, via group emails and/or during off-hours. Most think if they work hard they would be recognized becoming a part of something bigger but for many of us this won't happen. Few women are in management or have been promoted or deemed worthy of crucial roles. People are treated poorly and/or are pushed to breaking point instead of nurtured and balanced.

Pros

ThisWeek News is/was a subsidiary of the Dispatch Printing Co., friendly atmosphere, direct contact with supervision - in a helpful way. Insides Classified Sales not overly demanding to anyone with a work ethic. Pay structure a bit confusing but money to be made through commission each month (in addition to a regular base salary). -It was nice that at the end of the day, you were done - no taking work home. -Local management helpful but clearly confused like we were about the sudden merger.

Cons

- Newspaper industry has been a in flux for a while. Gatehouse Media intent seems to be use the print subscriber base of the Dispatch (and numerous magazine pubs) to prop up the business while indirectly creating an full in-house DIGITAL marketing agency. At least be upfront about it. We're not stupid. - The pool of print products we're to cross-sell into has grown too large for one to be effective. - Gatehouse has not upfront about about what positions are being eliminated, merged , etc. Got tired of coming in and each day someone's cubicle was empty. Yet the occupants of the offices along the walls seemed to remain. - No effort to upgrade or even replace the old aging office furniture. It;s as if the Lewis Center, OH location is where chairs for the organization went to die. - Having to use broken or old office supplies; or, simply having to buy your own in order to better organized.
