I am the guy that likes to work 50+ hour weeks. I am the guy that prefers to take 15-minute lunches. I like the work. I have a track record of being the top performer. I am good at sales. I am good at tech. I like to build strong relationships with clients and coworkers. I like to encourage my teammates and succeed together. During the interview process and during my first week of employment I received impromptu feedback like "you're really easy to talk to", "you seem like a really smart guy, I'm glad there's another big brain on the team", and "everyone is excited that you're joining the team". The CEO talked at length about his focus on employee retention, career development, being people-first, and emotional intelligence. I've read the same business development books as him, I truly aligned with his vision, and I was eager to help build the business. Everyone I talked to independently asked me to provide insight as a new employee with fresh eyes. I thought to myself "Wow, this team really wants to grow and succeed." I wanted to help. On the second week I witnessed a series of comments in a meeting that I felt were negative and unproductive. It happens, especially in this field. I empathize with the stress and pressure. I felt that this was a good opportunity to gently comment on it for awareness. My voice was shaking but I spoke up and said something like "When you say it like that, it makes it seem like the other person isn't good enough. Perhaps a more effective process is to work together as a team and offer to help." This sparked a conversation that lasted about 30 minutes. It was a great, productive conversation. I felt that the team was stronger because of it. That was the wrong thing to say. A few hours later, I was in a meeting with the CEO wondering if I was "a good fit". I was blown away. Their first course of action was to consider firing me. There was a private discussion with the leadership team and the next day I was let go. The justification was that they don't have the time and energy to work through a mismatch in culture fit, claiming that we were having mutually negative experiences. I was not having a negative experience until the reactions from the CEO. I'm surprised and disappointed that, after everything they said about being people-focused and looking for a fresh perspective, they considered my comments as negative and that they did not have the leadership capability to work through it. What I've discovered is that this company capitalizes on people with low self-esteem by gaslighting them into thinking they can't be good enough unless management scolds them. The most senior employee there with an 8-year record was still convinced that he needed to be scolded from time to time to be a better worker. The CEO believes that these Glassdoor reviews are simply a business tactic by former employees and current competitors. I have no tangible connections to those former employees or competitors. I am just a guy that truly wanted to help this business. And I am telling you that these Glassdoor reviews are legitimate. Make no mistake. I was let go because I believe that the strong should help the weak, and they believe that the strong should reprimand the weak until they are strong. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Pros

I have been working for 318 for about three years, and the thing that stands out the most is the quality of the team that surrounds me. There are clearly strong friendships at all levels of the staff, and it's reflected in the work. It is also one of the few places that you can find the highest levels of expertise on the Mac, PC, storage, and networking sides of the field in the same organization. From a team member standpoint that really puts you on solid footing with the confidence you need to finish projects and follow through with that team, as well as learn from them. The culture also encourages strong and straightforward communication of both accolades and concerns, which I find very refreshing.

Cons

As with any consultancy, the demand can be strong at times, and it becomes important to develop the necessary skills to handle those trials. Gaining a strong understanding of tools, systems, and your peers early on can help to ease that. I also think that continuing to develop and define the system of routes to resolution with any kind of staff concern will help to improve the speed with which those concerns can be resolved. In my personal experience, the open door policy of a small business has honestly been wonderful, but I think that for different personality types a more clearly defined system would be helpful and comforting.
