We respect that everyone has their own perspective, and we want to briefly share ours. We have never let someone go for being sick if they provided a doctor’s note or a positive test. That said, we do hold everyone to a very high standard when it comes to reliability. We do not allow last-minute call-outs, and if an employee does so without a legitimate reason we can document, they will almost certainly be let go. This is a normal policy for many businesses. Unless of course, that employee has an established track record and significant goodwill with the company from being a reliable team member over a long period of time. It should be noted that the claims made above are not truthful. A last-minute call-out, no evidence that the reason given was valid, and a subsequent refusal to return over $1,000 worth of company equipment and supplies—combined with a complete lack of response—left us with no option other than to inform this individual that the next step would be contacting the police to report everything stolen. That communication prompted action and ultimately resolved the situation. While we hope to never have to take that step again, in a company of our size, it is inevitable that there will occasionally be a few bad apples.
