Pros
I have worked part-time with Triangle Swim School for nearly two years while completing my undergraduate degree at UNC Chapel Hill. While I had a few years of swimming experience, Coach Matt hired me on the basis of my prior experience coaching and tutoring children of all ages. By prioritizing work and rapport with children, Coach Matt developed a professional, student-focused staff that excels at crafting lessons for students of all ages and experience levels. The low instructor-student ratio allows for more efficient, hands-on coaching, a fun learning environment for the kids, and, importantly, an extremely safe swimming environment. All instructors are trained to follow a progression of skills that will produce the best improvement results, which has helped to make my coaching experience a success. However, unlike other swim schools in the area, Coach Matt chooses instructors and their lessons based on their personal strengths. Instructors are encouraged to come up with their own methods of student improvement, which personalizes the lesson to fit the needs of each child and allows for a more personal instructor-student relationship. During my time at TSS I have had the opportunity to receive and participate in paid weekly phone calls with managing staff. This helped to solve issues within my lessons and come up with solutions for any class difficulties; it also included an optional life-coaching discussion. These phone calls not only helped to improve my lessons, but also my personal well-being and ability to set goals for the future. I have also recently been accepted as a Crew Leader for TSS, which included leadership assessments helpful to my future career and an opportunity for growth within the company. Matt is also fair in regards to compensation and genuinely cares about his employees. Overall, I have really enjoyed my time working at TSS and will truly miss my boss and co-workers!
Cons
Working with kids in the water is a very energy-demanding job and can become tiring after many hours. However, this is easily overcome after a few months of working here.
