Pros

CSS has a great corporate mission to deliver a high-profile system to securitize mortgages. It has the backing of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, so it's like working at a very well funded start-up. It's a good opportunity to build your resume and gain some very marketable experience.

Cons

-- The best way to describe CSS is Orwell's Animal House. All workers are equal, but some are more equal than others. -- Because this is a good resume builder, that's what most of the executive management focuses on. Executive management is out of touch with the people, and does not take the time to understand how its decisions affect our ability to get the job done. -- I walk past my director almost every day. He doesn't even know I work for him, let alone know my name. If I say "Hello" to him, he barely nods as he passes. -- There is a high contractor to employee ratio, particularly in system development. Some of the contracting companies appear more concerned with delivering bodies than with delivering solid business processes. This is very frustrating for CSS employees who see better ways to get things done, but have no voice. -- In the Bethesda location, there are way too many people for the office space. Restroom cleanliness is an on-going problem. At times you may need to leave the office to find a public restroom.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We’re sorry that your experience at CSS fell short of your expectations. The work we are doing here is essential to the future of the mortgage banking industry and we want nothing more than to provide an environment that is positive, productive and collaborative. The feedback we receive from our internal surveys, as well as reviews like this, help us identify areas where we can improve. We recognize that the work here has a high level of complexity. During the past three years, CSS has evolved from concept, to development and now a functional production environment. We are excited for what the future holds. Thank you again for the feedback and I welcome any more details of your experience via email: hrquestions@commonsecuritization.com. Kathleen Haithcock VP, Human Resources

Pros

If you like to switch around onto different teams, they love that and will support horizontal movement with the same pay. Lots of employee engagement opportunities even though it is remote.

Cons

Too much change going on with the FHFA getting too involved. Threatened to bring employees back to the office, then stayed remote again. People got laid off, and instead of hiring more people they just rotate people horizontally instead of promoting people vertically. The amount of projects and work keeps increasing but there is not enough staff to support it, ends up becoming a toxic environment of overworking. No pay boost either, just arbitrary work rewards to appreciate you.
