Overly hierarchical organization with plenty of drama - Scientist/Engineer UCOR Employee Review

Pros

UCOR matches an additional 5% on top of the 4% on 401(k) contributions. Pays a little better than the Knoxville private and local governmental sector. Three-day weekends probably worth suffering through (4) 10-hr days. No business development required. Hires older people.

Cons

Many organizational changes for the worse coming swiftly and quietly since 1/20/25, with more expected down the line. Job permanence related to environmental management at the ORR in a state of flux. If applying, emphasize any DOE and military experience, even if not related to environmental cleanup. Hiring managers tend to turn a blind eye to private sector and other governmental experience when determining pay grade. Forging a path to better-paying and/or management positions is similar to campaigning for an Academy Award - the importance of opaque relationships and self-promotion are outsized when determining upward and lateral movement (no performance reviews to document contributions and goals). Very rare for rank and file over 45 to be promoted to management from within the company. Not uncommon to see professionals with 25+ years' experience reporting to millennial managers, sometimes from dissimilar lines of work.

Pros

Good pay....used to be a good company

Cons

It used to be a good company to work for but upper level and department management have created a toxic environment for the workers. There is no consistency and favoritism runs rampant. When concerns are raised for time fraud and issues, they are ignored, swept under the rug, and the person who raised the concerns is treated poorly or gotten rid of. UCOR has good policies for raising concerns but they are not followed when concerns are actually raised. Managers are brought to employee concerns over and over and nothing is done.
