Pros
Mission-based and patient-centered organization with excellent, highly-motivated senior leadership that is trying to reshape the culture of UMass. Large network of talented providers and a compassionate workforce. Excellent benefits, fair compensation. "Lean" organization that trains staff in principle-based methodology that relies on a collaborative team effort to improve performance by systematically removing waste and reducing variation - highly valuable!
Cons
*Need for more fresh talent and new/relevant skill-sets.* Highly unionized staff, which limits flexibility in cross-training staff, strains financial resources, and creates inequality for non-unionized staff. Poor attitudes among some staff that impact the culture - lots of "complainers" and not enough "doers." Somewhat disjointed with community hospitals; need for more "systemness," which is something senior leadership is working on. Academic health care system, which can create access issues (lots of academic doctors and patients but few clinicians.) Need more non-academic physicians to improve access. Unpaid maternity leave.
