Pros

-UPMC and Pitt are big name research and medical institutions -Because they're the biggest employer in Western, PA, you get to work with some really lovely & intelligent people -Pittsburgh is a great city to work in -Affordable health care insurance (for an individual) that is fairly comprehensive

Cons

-Pay is laughable. I worked in my field for 3 years before getting a full-time job at UPMC, had glowing recommendations from my previous supervisors (who had affiliations with UPMC), and specialized training; yet the hourly rate they offered me initially was less than what I was making as a part time employee at a national clothing brand - University of Pittsburgh and UPMC claim to be different and separate entities, and yet there are so many departments, processes and jobs that cross over both sides; but no one can figure out where the divide is, and wires frequently get crossed. Example - I graduated from Pitt and had a student profile, two years later, I traveled for work and instead of reimbursing my travel expenses through direct deposit as they stated they would, they mailed a check to the last address from my Pitt student profile - despite me having a UPMC payment profile which they were paying me through every two weeks. - They do NOT care about sexual harassment. I was harassed two times before there were any sort of official repercussions, and after the first incident, I still had to work in the same suite as the harasser. I know of two other women who experienced similar and more extreme situations (i.e. physical assaults being disregarded by UPMC). -They are your employer, your insurance provider and your doctors/medical providers, meaning if you work for a PhD or an MD, those individuals can look up your medical records. -They respond to nothing but threats of lawsuits. My final paycheck was incorrect and it took me an entire month to get ahold of my HR representative, who then promptly sent me a check with the corrected amount on it. When I deposited that check, the money was somehow withdrawn from my account by UPMC TWICE. The bank tellers at my local PNC said they had never seen a company do that before without reporting the check as fraudulent. -They actively try to thwart any unionization efforts by any and all employees, and have used illegal measures in the past to do so. -Parking for any of the Oakland buildings is an absolute nightmare. The only lots available in Oakland have years long waiting lists and cost well over $100 a month (yet they can't pay their employees a living wage) and the only affordable parking lots (along 2nd avenue - a 20 minute walk to any of the Oakland buildings, or Southside - a 40 minute walk to any of the Oakland buildings) still cost $40 a month, and the employee shuttles they provide runs only every 30-40 minutes between 9am and 3 pm, and anytime after 6pm. -They are purposefully misleading when it comes to rolling over your retirement money... every time I call the retirement center, I get different information that usually contradicts what I was told the day before. -They claim to be a non-profit, yet their CEO made almost $9 million in 2019 (again - they still can't pay their employees a living wage though). -No matter what they claim, their community reputation is despicable.
