Pros

The administrator is great, and most of the employees are amazing people who really want to make a difference. The leaders in most areas of the organization are doing their best and trying to improve things.

Cons

I wouldn't wish the sealift group of senior leaders (DH and MSH) on my worst enemy. People are dropping like flies (retiring to escape, resigning, lateral moves, etc.) because the two treat folks like gum on the bottom of their shoes. They are nasty, narcissistic, just awful human beings who treat people like servants. They are not going anywhere. I can't imagine any other organization would take them. I've not seen anything like this anywhere else. They lack self-awareness (like most narcissists), not to mention zero business acumen. Concepts that are basic to most executives are above their heads. Don't expect any accountability; there is a strong sense of cronyism. If you bring up opportunities for improvement, you will only get scapegoating, retaliation, and belittling. Everything is someone else's fault or responsibility. If you are comfortable in an abusive environment, these are the people for you. Otherwise, there are plenty of other places to work- even within MARAD. However, if Sealift is what you are offered and you are accustomed to a respectful workplace..run!

Pros

There are not many advantages to mention, unfortunately. You can consider this a stopping point in your career, but plan your exit strategy before you arrive.

Cons

This is not a place to consider starting or continuing a career! Some offices have historically not managed federal funding, so these offices look to other existing sources. This means SES' and directors, particularly for one office that has historically been looking to better define itself, are out for themselves and hoard the work or share only what they want to. It is very much about cronyism; therefore, it seems to not be about good work but instead work that has pre-determined ends. Most people who start their careers at this agency leave after one year; and many who come here leave at the earliest convenience. Finally, the agency protects their own at all costs, so you have to watch out for the "bulldog" it keeps hidden away - for federal personnel affairs. The list of those affected is numbers close to double digits.
