Pros

Good location and some good people at the company.

Cons

The Select department has too much work to go around. Being that the department is only a few years old, a lot of accounts have been won but it seems management has been late to the party on getting more account managers. I was brought on at the beginning of the year to manage accounts in Austin and San Antonio. After a month of watching training videos (that actually do not train you) an Account Manager in Arizona took disability leave, at which point I became the backup since Arizona lacked bandwidth for someone in the state to manage the accounts. What was supposed to be 3 weeks of backup turned into 8 months as the original AM quit. I was told that if work became overwhelming they would get a national AM to handle the book so I can actually work on what I was hired to do. Unfortunately that never happened as that team is also spread thin as well. This unfortunately put me in a situation where I was ill equipped to handle the Arizona book as there was no ramp, just straight into a full book without getting into rhythm with new systems and processes. That book was so demanding that even on PTO I was getting calls from my manager asking to clarify things. This happened on multiple occasions. I was also told by one of the more senior AMs who has been there for a while that if I wanted to succeed here I would need to answer emails/calls even on PTO or over the weekend to not get so far behind. For anyone who values their sanity and PTO time this is not normal even if it is seen as “Good practice” in the company. USI likes to come off like a different broker, but they’re the same as the rest. Run by producers who get to get away with whatever they want and just push their work onto you. Expect producers to bind policies and not even have the decency to send you the finance agreement the customer signed. Or to collect payment at all sometimes. Expect producers to want certificates out within the hour, even tho the common practice and expectation set by management is 24 hours. Things of that nature when it comes to producers. If you make a mistake or miss something, a producer or their manager will just tag your boss, team lead, and their bosses all in the same email asking whats going on. Very passive aggressive stuff instead of talking to you directly. As a result, if you agreed to a Hybrid schedule like working in the office twice week, they’ll change that to you having to come in 3 or 4 times a week, as if coming into the office more is what is going to solve the bandwidth issue. The team lead is very nice and knowledgeable, but unfortunately she has racked up so much PTO from being with the company since the beginning that she is hardly ever available. Someone else should probably be team lead, but then again with everyone being spread so thin, the responsibilities of a team lead wouldn’t fit in that department as of right now anyway. Agency logins are a mess. You always have to borrow someone’s login to get access to a dec page or something else. People don’t even know which logins work anymore as the excel sheet that is supposed to keep track of that is not updated. I would not recommend joining the select team anytime soon, as in the 9 months that I have been there I saw 3 people quit and 1 person leave to another department.

Pros

You get out of it what you put into it. Autonomy and responsibility if you are fluent in the principles of extreme ownership. Think of it like running your own business as an entrepreneur, with a deep well of resources at your fingertips to help you be successful. High upside if you are willing to put in the work! (and that doesn't mean 50 hour weeks or unmanageable workloads)

Cons

If you don't have an open mind, are closed off to learning new things, and don't have a "how can I help" mentality, this may not be the best fit for you. Pay (base salary) may be slightly lower than other consulting firms, but total rewards package in the aggregate is competitive, and high upside potential with career path opportunities.
