Medical Technologist. It's an OK place to work... definitely needs some tweaks though. - Medical Technologist UnityPoint Health Employee Review

Pros

If you have an MLT/MLS/MT certification, you WILL be hired. This is great for new grads, especially with the current 10,000.00 sign on bonus for 3 years of work (yes. They have always been understaffed, which is the reason for this. More on that later.) SOME of the people (about 75%) are pretty great to work with, and you get a lot of PTO compared to other places I've worked (about a day per 2 weeks worked, if you are a 1.0 FTE). You get to do highly complex testing, fully making use of your education and skills...not just a glorified phleb. In fact, the techs here don't do ANY phlebotomy ever, which some may enjoy. I think our pay is pretty competitive in the area for our position. There is also opportunity for advancement (see high turnover) but typically only if you work here at least 4-5 years minimum.

Cons

Staff turnover is insanely high in the lab. This means constant signups and overtime, which is good if you want to make a lot of money and have no life. Bad, if no one signs up and you're stuck dealing with operating a lab with a large volume of specimens that doesn't stop because there's no workers. If you make friends at your job, there is a good chance they won't be there in a few years. This is most likely due to a general apathetic treatment from management, high workloads where you are being highly scruitinzed (and not being rewarded for good work), and that extra 25% of people who AREN'T awesome to work with are pretty unfriendly and bitter...especially to new hires. As far as non-lab coworkers, most all of the doctors and about half of the nurses are wonderful to deal with. The other half will downright treat you like garbage (and get away with it, even if they scream and hang up on you just for doing your job and you write them up for it).
