Pros

They pay money (although not well)

Cons

Have you ever seen the meme that says “IF A COMPANY TELLS YOU WE’RE LIKE A BIG FAMILY THEN RUN”? That’s VMLY&R. I was sold on the agency being different than other agencies because everyone cares about each other. That’s the opposite of my experience. They’re actually the worst agency I’ve worked for. There’s blatant favoritism from ECDs and CDs (“if you want to be a favorite then work harder”) and misogyny on a daily basis. I witness disturbingly inappropriate behavior including sexual harassment very often, mostly from higher ups. Some great campaigns came out of VMLY&R years ago which put them on the map but sadly it’s been going downhill for years and the creative quality has suffered. The worst part is that people really are treated as just a number. I would not recommend this agency for someone who wants to do great work - VMLY&R is where creativity goes to die.

Pros

- I worked with some fabulous people. Many of my coworkers turned into lifelong friends. - Fun culture. There was always something fun happening in the office. - Some cool client work.

Cons

- Not much flexibility, at least on my team. VML prides themselves as being flexible in terms of their hybrid work. However, many teams still do not follow to model and I was stuck on a rule following team with little to no flexibility. It all comes down to your manager and the team you're on whether you need to be in the office. - My manager was a super micromanager. It got so draining that I couldn't take it anymore. My manager made many rude and condescending comments over the years and tended to talk behind others backs, which I thought was very unprofessional. - I didn't get a raise in two years. In this economy, I had to look for a better paying job to pay my bills. - No room to grow in my career.
