Pros

It is a remote role.

Cons

Here are all the reasons why you should stay far away from this place (whether you want to be an educational consultant/coordinator OR tutor). The hours and schedules are absolutely horrible. You WILL work night shifts (as late as 11pm), WEEKENDS (Saturdays or Sundays or BOTH), and you will work ALL holidays except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Years Day. PTO has to be requested over a month before you want to take a day off, and even when you take a day off or are SICK, your manager will STILL message you saying, "feel free to still log in today"...while they go on vacation and aren't expected to still log in. They make it seem like you'll be reaching your goals and getting a bonus every month, but it is not as easy as it seems. The goals are almost unachievable unless you work overtime. Managers will literally ask during the week if anyone "wants to log in for a few hours on Saturday, Sunday, etc." You are also going to be micromanaged like crazy! If you like being messaged for not being on queue because you're using the bathroom, need to let your manager know when you go to/come back from the bathroom, having to send your activity at the end of the day, having people and AI listening in and making sure you don't skip one word in the 30 MINUTE LONG script, and being pushed around to different teams with different responsibilities without any notice or reason (without being able to decline), then this job is for you! This position has taken a toll on my mental health and being here for less than 6 MONTHS has made me realize how disposable we are and all they care about is making money. They make us lie to leads/clients in order to get them to work with us and have been called out by multiple consultants many times. It's frustrating having to look for another job after just starting a new one, but this is what's been going on not only for me, but other people in this role. Not to mention people leave all the time and they are constantly hiring new consultants. Now I realize they do this because people leave so quickly after learning what Varsity Tutors is really about.

Pros

The teaching platform is excellent and user-friendly. The virtual classroom includes useful features such as an interactive whiteboard, which makes online teaching effective and engaging. Experienced instructors also have considerable freedom to design their own lessons and adapt materials to students' needs, allowing for high-quality instruction. Payment is processed twice a week, and instructors can easily track their earnings through the platform, which provides transparency and convenience.

Cons

Student cancellations can be challenging, especially when they occur only minutes before class. Some sessions are repeatedly rescheduled and later canceled again, making it difficult to predict income. Policies and procedures may change frequently, requiring instructors to adapt regularly to new guidelines. Work availability can fluctuate significantly. Instructors may have many students during one period and very few later on, particularly when students complete exams or finish their school year. Overall, this can be a good opportunity for supplemental income and flexible teaching experience, but it may not be ideal as a sole or highly predictable source of income.
