Pros

Velocity was actually one of the best places I've had the chance to work, but I think that says more about the state of working in America right now than it does about Velocity's culture in particular. On the surface, it was a great place to work - autonomy, freedom to build your own processes within the guidelines set by management, high-quality branded swag if that's your thing, downtown office space, and access to self-guided training materials to build your skills. I can't say I woke up in the morning looking forward to go to work, but at least I didn't dread it most of the time.

Cons

It took a little while to realize that the culture of positivity there was a toxic kind of positivity. Management seemed unwilling or unable to have the kinds of tough conversations necessary to navigate the Covid-19 pandemic, and at the end of the day the people who were spared layoffs were the ones who were part of "the family" and not those who were actually top performers. The rest of us were given the false impression that the company was working hard to keep us, but unfortunately the CEO seemed blinded by national politics over the reality of the business market. All the necessary pivots happened too late, including transitioning the staff to work from home, because upper management only seemed to want to view the market landscape through the lens of Trumpism. Of course I don't know the whole story, but I do know based on public record that they applied for and were approved for the federal payroll loan program for up to $1m. They then laid off a good number of their staff and kept only family members. And to make myself perfectly clear - I mean they laid off some of the top-performing recruiters they had in order to keep blood relatives who didn't even have a consistent job title or function on board. I don't think this was done maliciously, but I do think a culture of poor planning and prioritization led to that moment and will continue to drive the company moving forward. The reason I say that is because the timing of the layoffs happened to where those affected will not be getting the full three months of extra unemployment money, and I think if they were really looking at the big picture they would have taken that into account.

Velocity Resource Group Response
5y
I have never responded to any review good or bad... but this is just too hard for me to read without comment. This is a very disappointing post for me to read. I am the Co-Founder of Velocity - I have co-owned this company for 19 years. We have worked very hard to build a quality work environment, provide excellent benefits and pay to our employees which compete and exceed those from most large corporations. We have tried to create a great work environment for all our employees and up until March of this year we were having the best year in our company’s history. Our Company was nominated (not by me.... but by our employees) and was picked as top employer in Tampa for 2019. I am sure it is easy to look back over the last few months as an armchair quarterback and say that you would have done one thing over something else, but here is the hard truth. Millions of companies have had to make very difficult decisions in these uncharted waters. You do not own the company; you have no idea how challenging it was to see our company revenue almost disappear. You have no idea how difficult this was and how many sleepless nights were spent worrying about our employees that we, the ownership, went through.....all while I was going through chemotherapy while fighting a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. So you can point out all of the negative things you would like to...but you personally told me multiple times how much you liked working here, how you were provided a great opportunity and you worked with THE BEST team. I am so sad that we had to make difficult decisions in an environment that we have never seen before. We did everything we could to keep the company together while we waited for our revenue to return. It did not and we had to make cuts to our workforce. The most disappointing part of reading your post is your bitter tone towards me and my family while you hide behind anonymity on this site. Velocity Resource Group is a family business and I make no apology about this. You may not like it but that is what we are. When you start your own company and run it for 19 years, I am sure you will run it how you want to, not how someone employed for just over a year feels it should be run. It is easy to fall prey to all of the negative forces surrounding us today...I can only hope you find a great job soon. A job that that makes you feel as positive as you felt while working here - as you said in your review, "Velocity was actually one of the best places I've had the chance to work".

Pros

Velocity was a great place to start my career in talent acquisition and helped to shape me into the recruiter I am today. Many of my coworkers became close friends and the collaboration among the recruitment team was always special. People went above and beyond to help each other and to balance the ebbs and flows of the workload. There was also frequently fun snacks and food brought into the office. At the beginning, the culture was strong and we used to have team bonding events and celebrations outside of work.

Cons

Leadership tends to make decisions based on emotion, and a lot of things get rolled out before they’re fully established or thought through. It often feels like the company’s strategy is to keep employees for a few years and then find ways to push them out once their salaries get higher. Top performers were let go with no explanation. Leadership is quick to label former employees as disrespectful or having attitudes. There’s also a heavy focus on AI and improving an internal CRM, even though there are already plenty of established 3rd party platforms that do the same thing. It doesn’t feel new or innovative, but it’s being prioritized at the expense of other areas that need focus. It's not uncommon for processes to change from day to day. Unorganized chaos is how I would describe the average week at Velocity. There’s a strong sense that leadership prioritizes themselves and their own financial interests first. Nepotism is so prevalent across the company that it's hardly worth mentioning - it's just the way it is and that will never change. Even as a top performer who stayed in the same role for a few years, there were no real conversations around growth or advancement. Overall, it feels like there’s absolutely no investment in employee development, which is something anyone considering the company should be aware of. In fact, leadership consistently seemed inconvenienced by people wanting to advance in their career.
