Pros

I don't have a single pro to list

Cons

An absolute disgrace of a publication with no standard for journalistic ethics. Leadership is more interested in pleasing the executives of the companies the reporters are covering and has been known to intervene in stories on companies'/executives' behalf. Sexism and retaliation are rampant. And to say people are overworked is an understatement. Some editorial staffers work around the clock, barely sleeping. Individuals are publishing as many as a dozen stories a day each. It's a content mill and a terrible one at that. Everyone is quitting. Stay far far away. It's not worth the good pay.

VentureBeat Response

VentureBeat implemented a pivot that significantly altered the direction of VB's editorial focus in 2021, to serve a readership of enterprise technical decision makers. The management team recognizes that shifts in editorial strategy can sometimes cause concern with staff, and we continue to be proactive and understanding in addressing internal and external feedback from staff and ex-employees. VentureBeat's shift in editorial focus was executed to focus on technical enterprise news, not to please the executives that we cover. We have rebuilt the team to focus on this new direction, and we will continue to listen to employees and consider their feedback.

Pros

There are smart, capable individuals doing their best under difficult conditions.

Cons

VentureBeat is defined by a lack of strategic clarity and operational discipline. Priorities shift frequently without explanation, decisions are often made impulsively, and leadership lacks alignment on core goals. Execution suffers as a result, with teams pulled in conflicting directions and no consistent framework to measure success. Processes are either absent or routinely bypassed, creating confusion and inefficiency. Internal communication is fragmented, timelines are unrealistic, and resource planning is inconsistent. What structure does exist is often eroded by last-minute pivots driven by top-down pressure rather than data or long-term thinking. The result is a high-friction environment that discourages focus and sustainability. Talented people burn out quickly, not due to the work itself, but because of the disarray that surrounds it. The place is borderline abusive.
