Pros

great mission and worthwhile cause decent work/life balance some people are really great

Cons

Consistently bad communication from higher-ups. Lack of transparency, lack of direction. The atmosphere often feels disingenuous and dishonest. Your experience as an employee will really depend on what team you're on and what location you're in. Not everyone is treated equally. There is a high turnover rate for a reason - several people have left suddenly. Founders are hyper-focused on product but not so much on developing teams or focus on their users. People are let go at the drop of a hat (even people who have been there for some time) so there is no sense of loyalty or being valued. Feels quite stressful because you’re never sure where you’re going or how long you’ll be there. The founders try to present themselves as approachable and open but they’re not and can get defensive if you ask questions or propose ideas. It's a real pity because the product itself is great.

Pros

Hires great people. I really enjoyed working with my colleagues - the people who are there care a lot about the mission, which makes for a nice company culture. I also think the founders are genuine about putting women’s health first, and come at the job with a really good value system. I appreciated the open door policy, and felt my ideas were heard, even if the bottom line meant there wasn't scope to action everything. Being a start-up, there is high accountability and expectation to move at pace, but I always felt the expectations were reasonable, and managers + founders were accomodating when it mattered. I really enjoyed my time there.

Cons

The cons were largely things that relate to start-ups in general. As the immediate needs of the company shift, so may your role. You may find yourself working in an adjacent role to where you started or intended to go. Given its small, there is less formalised training/mentoring and clear stepped progression. But these things can be a pro or a con depending on what you want to get out of it.

Pros

Strong sense of ownership and ability to create change. Your ideas are what they want to hear. Keen eye for producing quality work, the feedback and the approach helps Foster strong development skills from the diverse and knowledgeable talent available within the Engineering team. They are always willing to lend a hand and step in to care when you are struggling.

Cons

No sense of people development and progression, there is no time to reflect and hone your skills, unless you action this yourself. I’ve witnessed at times reliance on micro management and saying we are a startup we demand excellence knowing fully that mistakes can happen. Resorting to ‘we should all be working harder’ to cover of issues of mis-management in tasks.
