Pros

Opportunities to learn for engineers, coworkers are friendly, extremely smart, and effective at their jobs. If you say YES to everything and do not push back you might be treated well. The product has great market potential. The CEO has been able to raise money and seems to have connections

Cons

Management has not been able to come up with a strategy for bringing a product to market in years. The strategy has been to try all paths at once which leads to poor outcomes because, of course, you can not expect to get everything done with limited resources! Even though the team of engineers and scientists pushes back against hilariously impossible timelines, management does not listen for some reason. Like clockwork, the team does not come close to meeting the aggressive timelines which leads to ICs and front line managers being publicly blamed for failures. The sheer number of people who have quit and been fired is staggering. Once the firing is complete a new bunch of workers are installed, and the lifecycle repeats. Leadership's "methods" to communicate changes due to mass firings, and rapid changes in strategy causes more harm and misunderstanding than if nothing was said at all.

Pros

Seeing our flagship product, Callisto, gain global traction—especially in clinical labs—has been incredibly fulfilling. We’re not just building tech for the sake of it; we’re helping real patients, and that gives the work deep meaning. As a current systems engineer at Volta Labs, it’s frustrating to see misleading or overly negative reviews from former employees that don’t reflect the reality of working here. I’ve been with the company for over a year now, and my experience has been overwhelmingly positive. Like most startups, Volta moves at breakneck speed—and yes, the timelines can be aggressive. But that’s part of what makes it exciting. The fast pace keeps the work challenging, dynamic, and genuinely rewarding. If you enjoy solving hard problems and learning quickly, this environment will energize you. One thing that really stands out here is the leadership. Management does an awesome job with communication—keeping the entire team informed and aligned through regular updates and open dialogue. And the CEO in particular is both inspiring and grounded. Every time I’ve spoken with him, he’s brought a ton of energy and clarity. What’s even more impressive is how open he is to feedback. He listens, he reflects, and he’s constantly evolving as a leader. That kind of humility and growth mindset is rare—and it sets the tone for the whole company. Bottom line: If you want to be part of a mission-driven team that’s pushing boundaries and actually making a difference, Volta Labs is a fantastic place to be.

Cons

Like any high-growth startup, things can feel a bit chaotic at times. Priorities shift fast, and not everything is perfectly structured. If you need a lot of process or predictability, it might take some adjustment. Also, with how fast we’re growing, not every internal system has fully caught up—but the team is actively working on that.
