Pros
Love animals? This is a great place for you! Snuggling cats and walking dogs is basically part of your job, no matter what department you work in. Some people even get to bring their pets to work with them. Plus, helping homeless animals find new homes is very rewarding. Despite being the city shelter and open access, WHS strives to save as many lives as possible, and is basically no-kill. The animals are treated very well.
Cons
Like getting paid well for working super hard? This is not the place for you. Pay is very low (unless you are a VP or CEO). Benefits stink. Yes, they cover your health insurance, but time off is bad, you will NEVER get a snow day, and basically are expected to be on call 24/7. Forget having a personal life. Worst of all is the management of the company. There are some great people at the helm, but they seem to have zero business experience, or know what it takes to run a thriving business. As a result great people leave and bad people seem to stay forever. Even worse, when key people leave, positions are never re-filled, leaving the rest of the already under-paid and over-worked staff to pick up the pieces. Positions are routinely changes and departments restructured to try to make it work, but it doesn't. WHS is fueled by crisis and reaction to emergencies. The CEO will ignore you, and seems to spend more time building up her personal resume than caring to know who works for her, or actually being involved in day to day activities. Unless something good happens, then she steps in to take the credit. Most of the facilities are run down and overcrowded.
