Pros

I have and will continue to consider myself very lucky to work for this company. I am 58 yr old female who’s had a few different roles in my time but have never worked for such a friendly, supportive organisation as this company. I started as Customer Service, which was great, they allowed me to grow and develop into the role. I notice this with other staff too, they encourage staff to follow and work towards their strengths, I’ve never known this before. I was promoted to Business Development Executive within 8 months of starting, my manager felt my telephone and people skills would be better used to help the company seek and develop new business and the rest is history. I now work closely with the owner, between us we decide where we need to focus and who we need to be contacting, it’s always a joint effort and I’m always encouraged to follow my instinct which is so refreshing. I feel completely at ease and comfortable to make comments or suggest options outside the box. I personally like the flexibility the role offers me; it keeps me stimulated and work satisfied. There’s an upbeat atmosphere even when we’re under pressure which isn’t often, we’re a small team and we all pull together. There’s a great deal of respect for individuals and anyone new starting is always made to feel welcome and at home irrespective of their background or style.

Cons

I really can't think of any and that's being honest.

Pros

The majority of the team is great at working together, which would in other circumstances make for a positive work environment.

Cons

Upper management (the public facing owner of the company) was quite disrespectful on an almost daily basis, very condescending and there were frequent inappropriate comments which made the workplace continuously unpleasant. The company as a whole doesn't seem interested in sustainability, they are happy to use materials that can't be recycled and outsource production to cheap Asian factories. The office would be alright as a space if it weren't for the ping pong table which is used frequently right next to people working, which in a small space can be very distracting. In terms of career opportunities, they will say that these exist, but when prompted they didn't seem keen to invest much while trying to grow their business. My role was meant to develop a specific market, but I was offered a low-paid zero-hours contract only and it was always made clear to me that there was no job security or a permanent contract in sight, despite my good performance. Upon leaving I was told by the owner that I should work on my attitude - I found this both insulting and amusing, as this was referring to me frequently sharing my opinion when asked, contributing my own ideas and not just blindly following instructions.
