Pros

Chicago-headquartered firm whereas all the others of this standing or greater are headquartered in NYC.

Cons

Frat boy demeanor among many men (with expense accounts!), including management-level and middle-aged ones. And absolutely *everything* that connotes. HR is there to protect the firm's reputation. Not to protect you. Certainly not if you're a woman. It's an investment firm. Good for you, I guess, if your ethics and politics allow you to work at such a place with zero qualms. "Back-office" workers are most definitely treated as low caste, even though they're the ones who keep things operating. The admins, for instance, are the "moms" of the workplace and are not recognized for their immense (if "unsexy") contributions to the firm. No work-life balance in my department. The "higher-caste" workers relished this; us "lower-caste" ones were doomed to it. This was not a sustainable way of life for me. Managers tend to be men, though there has been a push in recent years (that started as easy talk, though it's possible this has since transformed into action) to be more respectful and recognizing of women leaders within the firm.

Thank you for your feedback. We take this input seriously. At William Blair, we actively strive to create a culture of collegiality and respect. Last year, we introduced “Truly Invested” to our employees, articulating what we stand for and the kind of culture we believe in: truly invested in one another, in our clients, and in the firm. This concept came to life as a result of what we heard in conversations about company culture with our employees across the globe. You mentioned a lack of diversity in our leadership; over the past couple of years, we have launched several initiatives to ensure that we are actively inclusive in what we do and in the decisions we make. One way we do this is through our Global Inclusion Council (GIC), comprised of key leaders and representatives from across the firm, who lead and support diversity and inclusion at William Blair. The GIC is committed to helping build an actively inclusive environment, bringing together perspectives from all areas of the firm. Also, we regularly seek guidance from members of our Business Resource Groups (BRGs): Pride Alliance, Veterans’ Alliance, and Women’s Alliance. Our BRGs are involved in providing input on our talent strategy and on our ways of working. Our HR team is committed to enhancing our culture and our employee experience. There is a lot of work being done across the firm in the areas of diversity, culture, and talent. It is unfortunate that your experience did not align with our cultural values. Thank you for taking the time to share your comments.

Pros

Great deal flow. Get to work on some interesting deals and you will learn a lot as a new analyst or graduate. Firm has some amazing senior bankers who are really good at what they do. There's room to develop if you really want to do it. But i can't speak for experienced roles / hires.

Cons

Office politics don't matter as much as an analyst but it's certainly there and you'll notice that. Work could be a lot sometimes (benched marked against investment banking standard) and middle mgmt. is pretty weak. And there's no incentives to fix that because it won't affect topline.
