Worldwide TechServices

Is this your company?

I'd rather push a boulder in Hell, than work for, or tell anyone else to work for this company. - Senior Hughes Technician Worldwide TechServices Employee Review

Pros

Pros? There aren't many. I can only think of two right off the top of my head. Full timers (Hughes Techs) are eligible to use company vehicle. Usually able to work outside of an office, and alone, with limited supervision. Other than what is listed above, I can not think of any other 'pros' working for this company. Unless you consider low pay, micro and poor management, being lied to, and having your job threatened, as 'pros'. I did not think it was possible to work for a company that rates worse on Glassdoor than Dish Network, but here we are. I was a full time employee for a year and a half with WWTS. I was able to escape before it totally crushed my soul. I walked away from this company in mid-February 2016, after more than a year and a half of unbelievable stress, micromanagement, being second-guessed, being lied to, having a bully and a tyrant as a TS, and realizing that WWTS is a dead end job.

Cons

Honestly, there are too many cons to this company for them all to fit here so I will post the highlights. •Compensation and benefits Pay for this type of work with WWTS is well below average. I hired on at $15/hr. This is a problem, due to unskilled labor in my area being hired on at anywhere from $12-$16/hr. Think about this for a moment. I could be an employee at my local Wal-Mart, completing overnight stock, and make nearly equal to, if not more money than a skilled labor position with WWTS. Benefits are worse. If you are a part time worker, they are non-existent. If you are a full time worker you will find that the benefits are grossly overpriced for what is offered. Being a full time employee of WWTS, you will be responsible for working on Hughes branded satellite equipment, Hughes branded network access (Where Hughes manages a site's IP network) Dell, HP, Lenovo, and other companies computers, network equipment, and many other assorted electronics, as well as software. I have been employed by other companies in the past, performing the same type of work, sometimes with less responsibility, who all paid me substantially more when I hired on. Furthermore, you will probably not receive any type of raise in pay. I personally know two, now ex-coworkers who have not received a raise in more than 5 years. Furthermore, with their experience and abilities, they both should be making more than $20-25/hr, yet they are not. These employees could easily make $30/hr+ if they were hired by a companies IT department, yet they have not moved on. I personally think its just a matter of time for them, as they informed me they "have just about had enough". •Management. In my opinion, management for this company is poor. There is constant hypocrisy, sudden changing of standards, out and out lying, and constant threats and hostility towards its own employees. I have never worked for a company where management, in this case my TS, or Territory Supervisor, showed so much open hostility towards his own field technicians. I have had my employment threatened on numerous occasions by my TS for trivial reasons. This is not how you manage people! My TS, at different points during my employment, asked me to lie to customers, as well as doing other things that are unethical, and bordering on illegal. This is not how you manage people! In one instance, I met a part time tech at a UPS facility on his first day, dropping off damaged parts to be returned to IBM. Part time techs are limited in the amount of time they can work per week. He received a phone call from the TS, who was our manager. After listening to our manager for about 3 minutes, I decided to use my phone to record the phone call. The call went on for about 15 minutes in total. In that 15 minutes I listened to this manager berate, intimidate, ridicule, and threaten termination to this tech for being unable to visit a site on that day. When the manager was done with his tirade, the technician turned in the damaged parts at UPS and told the manager he quit. He was not an employee for 8 hours! After this incident occurred, I discussed this with HR, with evidence, and they turned a blind eye to this managers behavior. This is unacceptable. Yet WWTS wonders why their turnover is so high. This is not how you manage people, let alone run a company! •Stress You will be stressed to the limit whilst employed with WWTS. I can not emphasize this enough. While employed by WWTS I found myself unable to sleep a majority of the time, I put on 35 pounds and my hair started to gray. In a little over a month of not being employed with this company, my sleeping is back to normal, and I have lost a majority of the weight I had put on. Take too long on a job? Threatened with termination. Get a bad review from a company like Dell or HP? Threatened with termination. Keep in mind you might get a poor review for not being able to make a repair appointment, since you were rerouted to another customer by your manager. Nice huh? Do not finish enough jobs in one day? Threatened with termination. Driving time is not taken into account, and many sites are potentially hours from each other. WWTS wants techs to complete at least 4 jobs a day, and no overtime is allowed without manager approval. That's all well and good, but don't give a tech 6 jobs to be completed each day, with 6-8 hours driving time at minimum, not considering traffic jams, rush hour, inclement weather, et al. •Lack of advancement I was told when interviewed by WWTS, this is an IT job. Hardly. That was one of the first lies I received from management. I currently possess an A+ certification, MCP and CCNA. THIS IS NOT AN "IT" JOB. This is pretty much basic computer hardware repair, and very basic networking. When I say repair, understand you aren't repairing anything. Your replacing a broken component such as a motherboard or video card. There is no room for advancement with this company at the current time. Unless things change, which I am not sure if they will or not, do not expect to go very far. For the most part, if you are a Hughes tech, you will be working on antiquated, and often times obsolete Hughes satellite equipment. God help you if you have to work on one of the Hughes 'Personal Earth Station' devices. Introduced in 1991. Discontinued in 2000. Let that sink in. That is more of a gripe at Hughes for allowing customers to operate such ridiculously outdated equipment, but understand that WWTS has to repair those devices. Also, as a Hughes tech, that is what you will be working on the majority of the time, as WWTS is the only repair provider for Hughes. •Closing In closing, I would implore you to work somewhere else. After the brief description here, does this sound like a place you would enjoy working? I had bad feelings about working for this company whilst in training in Massachusetts. During the 3 week training period, and learning more about the company, and how employees are treated, I started actively looking for another job. I will say that I decided to capitulate, and decided to give the company one year of my time, in the hopes that the situation would get better. Unfortunately it did not, and got progressively worse. So once again I would tell you to avoid this company. I'll go as far to say, if things do not change in the short term, WWTS will be bought out by another company, like Unisys, will have another restructuring, or will be bankrupt in the next 3-6 years. Look at their track record. 2 restructurings in less than 10 years? What does that tell you? Read the other reviews written here. You will notice an alarming trend. I think its safe to say that WWTS is the worst company in America to work for. Looks like Dish Network has moved to second place.

Pros

Could make your own schedule to a point.

Cons

poor hourly pay. No raise after over 2 years. Despite fixing devices after several other techs had been there before. 50k miles a year on my vehicle. No pay until you got to your first job and after your last job. I would schedule the first job closest to me and my last job closest to me. Management would schedule the jobs in the opposite. I would not abide by that. They were not happy about that. I wasn't paid hourly nor mileage to my first job or from my last job. Sometimes my job would be an industrial printer 2 hours away. Spend 4 hours replacing a laser diode in a laser printer. Then 2 hours home. 4 hours with no pay and mileage. Just 4 hours pay at $15 an hour while on site. It trashed my car so I quit and started my own home based business. Now I repair all kinds of electronics and don't put a single mile on the same care that is at 195k miles. Most of it from this company. Final note: they make you buy all your own test equipment and provide nothing.
