More Like a Corporation Than a University. - IT Support Technician II Yale University Employee Review

Pros

Yale has great benefits from time off to healthcare. Many people are impressed to hear that you work at Yale. There are elements here and there who listen to feedback and make real improvements.

Cons

You rapidly reach a point (depending on the job) where you can't advance any farther. It is very difficult to get promotions and to move from one job to another (with exceptions in a few areas.) HR has procedures, which make it sound easy but actual results are disappointing. You end up with very little change and can't really get anywhere without leaving the university. There is a great deal of inertia in many areas. This is often mistaken for bureaucracy but the rules and procedures really aren't that bad. I attribute it more to poor motivation. The situation with promotions tends to select for employees who don't care much and don't do much. Middle managers are encouraged to cut bureaucracy but there is a fine line between cutting bureaucracy and thinking you're above the rules. There are too many separate classifications of employees. The M&P and C&T classifications are a lot like officers vs. enlisted in the military. They have the same kinds of similar job titles (assistant vs. associate and technician vs. specialist.)
