Disappointing Mental Health Graveyard - Research Associate Yale University Employee Review

Pros

Decent mental health benefits Having Yale on your resume

Cons

Complete disappointment. Yale University may have once earned the reputation it has now, but it no longer deserves it. A lot of mismanagement. PIs often lack empathy and often poorly treat people. Yale does not seem to care how people are treated as long as the PI is brining in grant money and publications. My mental health suffered greatly here along with several other people I knew. Yale does not seem to foster free thinking and disagreeing with a PI can be problematic. The culture is very cut throat, unsupportive, shallow, and demoralizing. No one in management seems to take responsibility for anything and always seems to scapegoat people below them. Favoritism seems to prevail over merit. Anytime I asked about advancement, I felt my self worth was attacked in the form of “where else could you go making how much you do doing what you do.” By the end of the day I was so demoralized and tired I had no energy to do anything in my personal time. Yale was complete hell and made me feel worthless. That feeling of being worthless made me stay longer and put up with more than I should have, and my mental health greatly improved after leaving. They seem to expect complete loyalty from you, but don’t expect any loyalty from them. So disappointed in my experience here.

Pros

Incredible campus and student body. Thoughtful staff genuinely committed to making the university incredible. Ideal work life balance.

Cons

Some software engineering roles are a little disjunct from the campus life and silo'd into internal affairs

Pros

Great benefits, lots of opportunities, exciting environment

Cons

In academia, where salaries are generally lower than in the corporate sector, there can be a disproportionate amount of arrogance because many people are motivated by prestige and status rather than financial compensation.
