Pros

Great brand, LEGO set discounts. Fun office. Generally nice people to work with.

Cons

I did have an overall good experience at LEGO but there are a few issues I think the digital team needs to face and work on. I'll start with the good just so the cons are balanced. Good things include a great brand where there is a culture to be fun and "playing". It can feel a bit cheesy at times but I'd prefer this to a cold, colourless company. The products are also awesome and you really have a lot of respect for the teams that design and build them. It can be a real buzz when people around the world are buying LEGO products. Mostly, the company does well due to loyal fans so I'm not sure but I think this is the root of their success and not really their technology. Now for the cons. There are quite a few Senior engineers who have poor comms skills and some of them are borderline passive aggressive. This is off-putting for anyone junior to them who can't turn to them when stuck or genuinely want to discuss things. This is extremely hard if those "leaders" are in your own team. Highlighting this to a Sen Eng Manager didn't go well and became a "you" problem only to learn this was based on a boys-will-be-boys culture. Unfortunately, promotions are based on likability and that means the few people who are actually delivering and working hard are being dismissed for favourites. Bootcampers are preferred. This likability factor is openly accepted even in department meetings online and in the office where "direct reportees" will describe their managers as their "mates". Another issue is that with more Sen titles there is terrible communications skills and getting away with doing relatively little because you're liked. It's also not nice working with people who swear a lot and use profanity whenever they can, even in light conversation. It feels unprofessional and doesn't suit a toy company for children. In terms of the codebase and tech stack it's the usual Javascript, node and serverless which is fun to work with if you enjoy those technologies.
