Pros

Um, the new office looks cool from the outside? Other than that, I truly have nothing positive to say about this company.

Cons

treetree hired me away from another company in 2012. In order to "win" the position, I had three interviews and was asked to do a free conceptual project for them in a "contest" with their other top candidate. After all of that, I was offered the job. They were a small team at the time. I am a single parent and the sole provider for my two children. Before accepting the offer, my main question to the CEO was "Is this a steady, reliable position?" My kids' livelihoods depended on it. I was assured multiple times by the CEO that this was a secure position, that they valued their employees, that I was the candidate they wanted, that I would be joining the treetree "family," etc, etc, etc. So, I left my steady job and put my trust in treetree. I worked there for 3 days. At the end of the third day, I was called into the CEO's office and fired. The reasoning seemed very unclear. When I pressed for a reason, she cited a "widow" that I had left on a page (a word out of place in a document). When I pressed harder, they told me that I didn't work fast enough. As this was my first three days, I was just beginning to assimilate to the clients, projects, and work culture. I wasn't aware that I was being timed on my performance. Maybe it's my fault for expecting a fair chance at a small agency I knew very little about, but the current CEO was particularly callous toward me throughout this process. She offered me two weeks' pay as a severance but didn't file any of my paperwork, so that it looked as if I had never worked there. When I asked her to have coffee the following week to go over what had happened and see if there was anything I could do for them on a freelance basis until I found another position, but she simply told me that "agencies change their minds all the time" and she was "so sorry" for me, although her face and body language seemed condescending and not very sorry. For a CEO who's public image is very much built upon caring about others and "doing the right thing," she seemed to care very little that her careless hiring decision had put a single mother with two small children out of work. I have since gone on to have a very successful career at companies much larger than treetree, so being fired from that place ended up being a blessing in disguise. However, I will never forget the terrible and irresponsible way that the CEO treated me early in my career, and when other creatives ask me for my advice on joining the company, I simply answer with "I can't recommend it."

Thank you for writing this review. I have made many mistakes over the course of my career, but none haunt me as much as this situation. When we posted the position, we were looking for a very specific skill set and experience. At that time in the growth of the agency, we needed immediate integration into specific projects. As a four-person company at the time, we simply did not have the luxury of investing resources into training that we weren’t expecting to need. While it devastated me to do so, cutting ties quickly seemed to be the only viable option. I take personal responsibility for this mistake and apologize for the pain that it caused you and your family. I cared very much. I still think about this situation when we are hiring a new tree. It caused us to drastically change and improve parts of our hiring process. We are much more specific in our job descriptions and have become much more diligent researching our applicants and their specific technical skills. I am very happy to see how successful you are in your career. Thank you very much for the feedback. Warmly, Becca Apfelstadt Co-Founder and CEO

Pros

From the young professional's point of view, treetree agency seems like the perfect place to work on the outset. The company boasts young owners, fun projects, and an open atmosphere. Unfortunately, I found out firsthand that this impression is a facade. Unfortunately for me, this firsthand knowledge also came at a cost to my career.

Cons

Before I started at treetree, I had my doubts. While the owners seemed young and claim to care about doing the "right thing," the truth is that treetree has a history of firing employees for insubstantial and unconventional reasons. The Columbus creative community is small, and they are becoming known as a risky company to work for. The owners seems not to grasp that their irresponsible hiring practices and their tendency to fire-on-a-whim actually harms people's lives.

Thank you very much for taking the time to submit a report about treetree. As many of the reports on Glassdoor reflect, I care very deeply about every single treetree employee. The trees are a family and terminating employment is one of the most difficult decisions we can ever make. As with any organization, large or small, there are certain employee actions or behaviors which will lead to automatic termination. We owe it to our clients and to the entire team to hold fast to these standards regardless of the talent and ability of the offending employee. These reasons may seem inconsequential to some, but we take our code of ethics very seriously and make that clear from day one. I would prefer to be known as a CEO who makes difficult decisions than one who allows that kind of behavior (even once) to stand at the treehouse. We continue to grow and learn from each new situation and appreciate your advice. Sincerely, Becca Apfelstadt Co-Founder and CEO
