Unfortunately, everything about who runs the show (and how they do so) is deeply disappointing. I was miserable from Day 1, working under (and alongside) incompetent leadership; no one at the top possesses a single shred of empathy, ingenuity, communication skills, or basic common sense. I was spoken down to and dismissed on a regular basis, despite being kind, adaptable, and dedicated — and creating quality work that was beyond well-received by both our donor base and larger staff population. I was consistently put in compromising situations (both physical and emotional) and made to feel uncomfortable, if not in danger. The misdeeds of others were never addressed, and I was consistently made to be the fall guy for their poor decisions (whether it be logistical or behavioral). This is the kind of place where neither your character nor your talent matter: you will be unconscionably mistreated regardless of how much you care, how hard you work, or how phenomenal your results are. I won’t even go into how embarrassingly inadequate the salaries and benefits are — but the quality thereof matches the quality of the workplace culture.
If you want to find yourself in the middle of an inhumane, disorganized mess that prides itself on mediocrity, go right ahead. If you actually care about helping people and being treated with respect and dignity all the while, stay far away. I can assure you that I am far from the only employee, both former and current, who echoes this sentiment. They make their employees miserable while touting their unyielding passion for helping older adults; the irony is certainly not lost on me.
