We are extremely understaffed. We were understaffed before I joined the team, and we were even more understaffed when I left. The workload in many departments was overwhelming. The lab has and is still expanding without building any support systems to help employees manage that workload. From my experience and the experiences of others, bringing up concerns often felt dismissed by management. I frequently felt that management interpreted these concerns as incompetence on the worker’s part, when in reality we were simply stretched far too thin. Employees were often expected to take on many responsibilities beyond what was discussed during hiring, sometimes with limited training and often with little to no pay incentive. I cannot understate this enough. There are many ongoing issues within this location, and the responsibility for fixing them frequently fell onto individual workers. If a problem arose, you run the risk of being demoted or fired. The pay is low compared to the level of responsibility and problem‑solving expected. If you plan on staying, keep heavy documentation of everything you do and interactions you have with management to protect yourself. Quality oversight and communication between management and staff were inconsistent. When issues came up, it often took a long time to get clear answers, and raising concerns didn’t always lead to meaningful support. Employees who took initiative to fix problems rarely received recognition beyond a verbal thank you. Staff who contributed to SOP writing or revisions did not receive credit for their work, and expectations around documentation falls heavily on individuals regardless of their background. For new grads, be careful. They will ask you to be the forefront of development with no monetary incentive, with little to no support from management. You will still have to perform your regular workload on top of it. Many issues can arise with no protection because of it. Under previous leadership, morale was low, and many employees felt their efforts or concerns weren’t acknowledged. The new lab director seemed to be making improvements, but the lab remains understaffed, with new hires serving as replacements rather than true growth. Regarding workplace culture, I personally observed situations where employees from minority backgrounds, those with disabilities, or those with limited English proficiency did not seem to receive the support or reassurance they needed. This was especially concerning given the political climate in Florida. I would strongly advise applicants to consider both the current and past political environment and be prepared before accepting a position. The workplace itself was not hostile. Just keep an eye on yourself. I would recommend holding off on applying to this location for at least two or three years.
