Pros

The only pro for how excellence does things is children pass the state exam at high rates. But at what cost? as the tests approach they force children to have working lunches and do test prep from the morning to the afternoon with no breaks.

Cons

Excellence took over our network and ruined everything we worked hard for. They brazenly and openly admit to breaking the law including telling students with certain IEPs they can’t enroll there and kicking kids out for poor attendance. While the network is run by black leadership, don’t let that fool you. Their practices are as anti-black as a place like success academy. They don’t actually care about the staff as human beings, just the scores you get them. Their culture is extremely catty and they not only will talk about colleagues to other employees but they literally encourage people to spread rumors. In all my years in education I’ve never seen people with so many credentials be so terrible at communication, planning, or people skills. They get off on being shady and putting people down. Their takeover of public prep led to a mass exodus of students and families and staff because the community didn’t want to be part of their system that treats kids like just numbers.

Profound Disdain for Educators

Pros

--Well resourced --Invests significantly in summer programming for the strongest students --Wonderful teachers and staff --AWESOME KIDS in a really lovely community --Terrific school space (one of the best in the city) --Incredibly supportive of alumni who are now in high school and college ---Omg the kids are SO GREAT!!

Cons

--Trying to become Success Academy or KIPP and thus expanding far too rapidly given its perennial short-staffedness. --Test scores in math and ELA are the ONLY thing that matters. --Wants nothing but test prep and above all OBEDIENCE out of teachers. -- Not receptive to teachers' ideas or anything else except "how high would you like me to jump and for how long?" --Profoundly dysfunctional and disorganized. --Poor communication and lack of leadership breeds anxiety, toxicity, cliquishness among and otherwise lovely staff. --Traffics in standard charter school anti-Blackness/Brownness with its "broken windows" (seriously) approach to discipline. --High test scores reduce students to products 'sold' to donors and state funders for more money like every other charter school on earth --Children of administrators basically participate in the performance reviews of teachers.
