Dictatorial, micromanaging culture

Pros

The pay is decent, if you’re willing to forget the skills you’ve built in your career and willing to forgo giving opinions and having any autonomy.

Cons

Toxic culture Lack of understanding about anything digital and no desire to listen or learn from those that do know, going as far as pushing them out the door Unwillingness to consider change and that there might be a better way Top down damaging culture - think yelling at staff, discussing in a condescending way Heavily based on whether you’re liked by the top otherwise one minute you might be told you’re doing ok, the next that it’s not working They say they are data orientated yet don’t know what points are of value and what ones aren’t The SME industry is heavily outdated and FXE should be looking to change that, make it better - lack of digital understanding prevents this No understanding of the landscape they play in in terms of fitting into other businesses - recognition about what levers you have when SME lending isn’t as lucrative as insurance or consumer lending isn’t understood Micromanagement to the extreme

Pros

I can think of none.

Cons

Toxic leadership and poor management: Inexperienced senior management fixated on their own image than actually supporting staff. Feedback is not acted on, and decisions are inconsistent. Extreme micromanagement: senior managers send emails at all hours, weekends included, creating an unspoken expectation that employees drop everything to respond and salaries are low across the board. High turnover: People leave quickly, and it’s not hard to see why. Staff morale is low, and new joiners don’t tend to last long. No real career progression: Despite promises during recruitment, there are very few opportunities for development. Training and support are minimal. Work-life balance issues: Long hours are quietly expected, and there’s no appreciation for the extra effort. Culture of fear rather than trust: Employees don’t feel comfortable speaking up, and criticism is often met with defensiveness rather than improvement.

Pros

They offered me a good basic salary.

Cons

That no one seems to realise quite how demoralising it is to be micromanaged to the degree that they do. That the business chooses to employ about 60% of the people needed to deliver results. Senior managers send emails way into the night and on weekends; the message they are conveying is that you. also. should be. Huge disconnect between the Marketplace and the other side of the business where they sell technology to lending institutions. Would only have budget for £20k to bring in the perfect candidates. If they asked for £22k, FX would walk away. This coupled with the non profitability despite many years since inception didn’t inspire confidence re cash runways. Platform may have been good enough once upon a time but we live in a big data world now that lenders have been a part of since pre-Covid. The platform is not sophisticated enough to capture lenders’ criteria and is, thus, wholly redundant. The brokers would do their biggest deals off platform because they didn’t trust it and it was a hindrance more than anything. I wish this was a joke. Incredibly high turnover of staff. One of the partners I met early on in the role said ‘You’ll be here two months, like the rest of them’. He was wrong. I actually lasted five. I knew many that had come and gone but naively thought I might have been good enough to make a difference. I never once had a 121 with my manager. Ever. Even my probation was passed via text. Snr managers just don’t have enough time to do everything. Odd management team consisting of exclusively females who are all friends or have history together. I saw many males in the business get left out and either jump or get pushed. I’m not alleging anything; merely stating the facts.
