A Sad Truth

Pros

I worked as a designer at Fesco for just under 2 years. The pros of working at Fesco are few an far between. Honestly the only pros I can think of from my time here was the weekly pay check, and the friends I made while suffering through day to day life in this repressive environment.

Cons

Toxic work environment from the top down. Management is extremely inept and makes up for there lack of experience and talent with scare tactics to keep those below them "inline". If you are a creative person not just looking for your next pay check to get by this place is not for you. Time lines are short and the design taste is far out of date with no chance of ever changing. Oh and if you want to use your "vacation days" good luck while they claim to give 2 weeks paid vacation to all employees that is a joke since they force you to use one week of your vacation for Passover if you are Jewish or not. Hope you enjoy using those 5 days of actual vacation they provide. Making salaried employees finger print scan in and out in the morning and at night. If you are late they doc your pay and if you stay late you don't get overtime that seems fare. And lastly watching management put a chicken in a box as a prank and then let the cleaning woman suffocate it with a trash bag in the women's bathroom after they were done with it.........

Pros

I made some friends while I was there.

Cons

In so many ways I felt undervalued and unappreciated. The work rate was so demanding and I fought so hard to find creativity but the way the design department and the company culture is set would leave you drained, confused, in the dark, did-attached from reason and business sense. Designers get no help or insight into what works, they are left to create work with blind directions and then get talked down at as if you had all resources to achieve success. This company calls itself a tech company but by no means do those at the top make any effort to modernize any aspect of the operation, the internal and external branding is the worst I’ve ever seen. Moral is so low, the only people that last are those that are dedicated to their families and ignore everything around them in the workplace. The outreach the company has is lack luster at its best, sales can’t grow or build any significant partnership, ownership takes no responsibility, design and product development are tied in a slow laborious process with built in walls to block collaborative solutions and seamless efficiency. It’s really such a waste, it was built to it’s state by the founder and efforts of partners but the ownership has done next to nothing in bringing it into a new evolution, they simply have dropped the ball, and now anyone who works there will pretty much be guaranteed zero involvement in any sort of significant project. I’d give this place a negative score if I could, the only pro I can list is that I learned everything I don’t want from a job, I learned everything I don’t want in a boss, I learned everything I don’t wish upon anyone. My advice to the poor soul that has to accept this job is lay low, stay vigilant for an opportunity to come, and never by any means, give this place your trust, talent, and dedication.

Pros

Pay is in valid American currency.

Cons

You could write a novel about the issues with this place. Maybe someday, someone will. For now, to those of you considering applying or interviewing for a job at Fesco, consider this: -For starters, the company-provided health insurance plan is over $400 a month. Yes, per month. With a $2,400 deductible. Want a lower one? It’s yours for $575 monthly. Good luck complaining to the HR department...there isn’t one. -There is zero opportunity for advancement here. There are zero women in leadership positions. There is zero training: you will be thrown into the mess as soon as you set foot in the office and it will only get worse. -Speaking of training, mandatory sexual harassment training doesn’t happen here. No wage statements are given to new hires, either. With no HR, that’s to be expected. On top of all that, forced, unpaid overtime happens every year in preparation for the big Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Department of Labor will eventually have a field day with this place. -There is next to zero communication within the office, often within departments. As a lower-level employee you’ll be given no information on why you’re being told to do what you’re doing. Entire product lines have been canceled on a whim. -The walk to get to and away from Fesco through industrial nowhere, Brooklyn adds thirty minutes of filth and truck-dodging danger to bookend each miserable day. Trust me, when it’s raining or snowing out, you’ll learn that “close to the subway” is in the eye of the beholder. The higher-ups drive for a reason. -All this work and stress is endured in the service of extremely low-quality products sold at ridiculous markups. Don’t take my word for it, go ahead and look up Amazon reviews for products by Coby or Chargeworx. You’ll find a one-star showcase of broken electronics and broken promises, with a complete failure to meet even the lowest expectations. -I almost didn’t want to mention this because it’s so disgusting, but you should know that the excretory nature of Fesco isn’t limited to their products. There are signs in every bathroom mandating that dirty toilet paper not be flushed down the toilet, but instead put in an uncovered trash can. That’s right: every bathroom has a pile of used toilet paper in it. You can imagine the smell. Try not to. To be fair, I have learned some things working at Fesco. I’ve learned not to ignore red flags like a filthy, garbage-strewn and carpet-stained office, an interview where I can barely get a word in, and nearly ceiling-high cubicle walls that lend the place a prison-like atmosphere. I’ve certainly learned to be more skeptical of 5-star Glassdoor reviews. At the heart of it, Fesco is a very old-fashioned company that’s willfully ignorant of the last 50+ years of evolution in business management practices. It started as a family store and is still run with the attitude that you’re here because daddy said so, not because you’re getting any sort of career benefit or professional growth. You’ll get paid every week, that is true, but the real cost is far greater. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
