Pros

You get to spend parts of the working day outside and at interesting sites in the local area. Accommodation is provided for a small charge. You get a discount at Cotswold Outdoors.

Cons

There is little to non active or credible research done at any of the centres and a lack of funding to implement any. If you are a biology or environmental science student who enjoys research, this can be frustrating and will severely limit your options if you have to complete an academic project during your placement year. The pay is very low compared to the hours worked. You usually live on site which limits your privacy and can make it hard to establish a divide between work and days off. From what I observed at the centre I worked at and at others, higher education placements or education assistants became dogs bodies for the work others at the centre did not want to do. It is not degree level work. If I had the option to re-do my placement year, I would not return here.

Pros

- Free food sometimes - Some free workshops (eg. ecology) - Lovely staff to work with

Cons

- Very low pay for the job difficulties and expectations - Expected to be available 24/7 - 12 hour working days - Sometimes nights ontop - Physically and mentally exhausting - Job advert contains only a small amount of what the job actually entails - You cannot have a life outside of the job I could go on.

Pros

- The teaching side of things is fun. - If you have no life or responsibilities outside of work it might be for you

Cons

- Expected to do 50+ hour weeks for near minimum wage during busy periods - Not advertised or mentioned in advert or interview process what the 'real' hours of the job were. - 3 month notice period - way too long for how low the pay is and makes finding another job difficult. - Head office overbooking and leaving those on the ground to deal with it seems a common theme - Company refuses to pay overtime rather has people accrue loads of toil and forces them to take it when work is dead/there are no bookings anyway.
