Great people, broken leadership

Pros

The colleagues are genuinely sharp and passionate about the space. The people doing the day-to-day work are some of the brightest I've worked with, and that made the experience tolerable for as long as it lasted.

Cons

The fundamental problem at Fireworks AI starts at the top. The CEO operates with the belief that every employee is easily replaceable — a mindset that permeates every decision around hiring, retention, and how people are treated. There's little effort to invest in employees, develop talent, or build any real sense of loyalty or trust. When leadership sees headcount as interchangeable parts rather than people, it creates a culture of insecurity and low morale. Good people leave, and the ones who stay are left wondering when the axe will fall. For a company in a competitive space where talent is everything, this is a serious strategic mistake — not just a cultural one.

Pros

Revenue has been growing, but no one knows where it's coming from.

Cons

There is a noticeable level of employee dissatisfaction and a high rate of attrition, which is particularly concerning given the company’s strong performance. This disconnect highlights broader cultural issues. Fireworks lacks a cohesive company culture, and we rarely communicate revenue progress or celebrate new customer wins, which limits alignment and shared purpose. Decision-making is highly centralized with the CEO, often without meaningful input from key stakeholders. Additionally, the onboarding process provides limited support, leaving new employees without the foundational product understanding needed before they are expected to contribute.

Pros

The technology itself is interesting and there are some talented people on the team.

Cons

Where to begin. Compensation is below market and there's little transparency around pay or equity. Management is largely ineffective — decisions seem to come from the top with no clear strategy or roadmap, just constant direction changes that leave employees confused and burned out. The CEO micromanages and pivots constantly, which makes it nearly impossible to do meaningful work or plan ahead. There is no real path for career growth — no structured reviews, no mentorship, no ladder. You're expected to grind without any investment in your development.
