Pros
Excellent benefits, generous leave policy. Work is accomplished mostly within one's own purview. No one is standing over you micromanaging, but deadlines are expected to be met. The work environment is pretty casual, but appropriate levels of professionalism are expected. They belong to the State Retirement System, but it takes 7 years to be vested. There is also a tuition reimbursement program.
Cons
The salary ranges start out at only 80% of nominal pay for jobs performed. Evaluations are done annually, so there is usually only one opportunity for a pay increase. Not all positions afford the leeway to be innovative and prevent the ability to show what you are capable of. Sometimes you find yourself "stuck" in low level positions, especially if you have no credentials beyond high school.
