Pros

Posh fancy offices, generous on work socials, good access to certain expertise internally

Cons

High staff turnover at all levels, no professions if your face doesn’t fit, inappropriate behaviour by executive team in social situations. The company has 4 key values it likes to impose. Firstly, they are DISTINCTIVE. The only thing distinctive is the bright orange/yellow, or “orello” colour of the branding and offices. In fact, if your blood doesn’t run orello, you won’t last long. You are also pigeon holed into your area, with no option to work within other teams, or expand knowledge. Secondly, Fortus is INCLUSIVE - well, if you are a “Fortus” person, you will find opportunities open up, especially if you are part of the “boys club”. If you are not, or you have been inherited by one of their many acquisitions, you will find yourself leaving, either by choice or force. I have never seen a business with such high staff turnover at all levels of the business. People just seem to disappear. Thirdly, members of the team are VALUABLE - in that they expect to charge national firm fees to regional firm clients, and if the client doesn’t like it, they simple disengage them. Lastly, they are COURAGEOUS - you need to be, to charge the fees and push unnecessary services onto clients. Final point is totally inappropriate behaviour by directors/executives at social events - probably induced by alcohol. But the comments and conversations towards junior members of staff was totally inappropriate on so many levels, yet they get away with it.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts as a former member of our team. It’s obviously very disappointing for us to read. Given the nature of your final point, we felt it important to respond to this first. As a business that cares deeply about its people, we have a zero-tolerance approach for any type of inappropriate behaviour. This is stated clearly within our company policies which are shared with every employee when they join Fortus. Thankfully, we’re pleased to say, we rarely receive any formal complaints against members of our team. Despite this, we’d always encourage inappropriate behaviour to be reported immediately to our HR/People team and/or a line manager in order that investigative action can be taken. With channels available for any of our people to voice their concerns in confidence, we’d always reinforce the message that people should feel both comfortable and confident in voicing those concerns at the time of any alleged incident taking place, both inside and outside of the workplace. On the point of employee turnover, in general, this has been a challenge for all professional services firms over the past few years. Given the competitive nature of recruitment often leading to the enticement of people away from the business, and those who decide to move on, our staff turnover’s where we’d expect it to be. We’ll always champion inclusivity as an essential element of our culture and whilst the vast majority feel at home working at Fortus, we do of course recognise personal values and needs don’t always align with our own company values - that’s both natural and understandable. Our values were established ‘by our people, for our people’ back in 2020, and are simply there to ‘guide’ us both culturally and operationally. With regular improvement opportunities being a key aspect of our business’s wellness and growth, it would be remiss of us to ‘pigeonhole’ our people - particularly with those who have ambitions, ideas, and skills beyond their existing role. In fact, we have numerous examples of team members moving into different areas who’ve taken on new responsibilities and roles within Fortus through the secondment/cross-working programmes we have in place, to help advance their own personal growth whilst supporting the evolution of the business itself. When it comes to the knowledge, expertise, and support we continue to provide to our clients, we’re comfortable with the fees we have in place for quality of work and expertise we provide. At Fortus we’re sincerely invested in the success of our clients and their business/es, and so as business advisors (not just accountants), we simply wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t offer up or promote services we have that might be valuable to helping them achieve success along their business journey. Although you’ve now left the business, we’d always encourage further discussion on the points you’ve mentioned. As with all former team members who’ve chosen to move on from Fortus, we wish you all the very best for the future.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, feelings and advice to management here at Fortus. We’re delighted to hear your of your positive experiences during your time working with us; our people, workplace, training opportunities and social events – these are fundamental to our success and inclusive culture which we take great pride in. We’re disheartened to hear of your not so great, personal onboarding experience. From our extensive investment in our recruitment process via our dedicated partner, right through to the successful completion of probation, we’ve a structured programme that can and should be applied by your line manager. We’d welcome further insight into your personal onboarding journey to see where improvements can and should be made for the future. To your comment ‘top management blinkered’ - our senior management team have been very open in sharing the fact that leading the business in a challenging market against an ambitious growth plan (and pandemic) has been, at times, extremely testing. We’re sure you can appreciate that experiencing such exponential growth and success in such a short space of time can manifest itself in many ways. Having to adapt at a moment’s notice meant there’s often been a requirement to take a step back and look at the ‘here and now’, which we understand can perhaps be construed as ‘unpredictable’. Adding to this, whilst we’re a transparent organisation, you will not have sight of all strategic decision making and the obstacles and challenges faced by senior management. Nevertheless, it would be unfair to say our senior management team are neither unapproachable or closed-minded to new ideas, different approaches and opportunities. This has been validated by both long-term employees who’ve been with us for many years, or new starters who’ve chosen to join Fortus since 2020. At Fortus, diversity isn’t simply a box-ticking exercise for us. When it comes to genders, beliefs, perspectives, education and backgrounds, we recognise a deep societal duty to strive to ensure diversity’s embraced within the communities we serve, and within our workplace itself. As with many organisations, diversity remains a challenge, yet is one we are prepared to continue to rise to. By way of example, we’re proud to have many senior females in key and influential roles within our senior management team across the business. This is further reflected in the fact that we don’t have an ‘all white male’ Executive Board, and both our Client Advisory and FORUS Employee Boards also consist of male and female team members. Additionally, we’re pleased that the make-up of our national business comprises almost a 50/50 split of male/female colleagues. Your advice to ‘listen to our experts instead of telling them’, we simply wouldn’t be the business we are today had we not sought out and provided our people with both the platform and mandate they need to successfully deliver on both business and client expectation. We’ve gone well beyond what might be described as ‘traditional’ areas of expertise for an accountancy firm - our experts bring additional proficiency in areas such as Property, People, Marketing & Branding and more – this expertise is incredibly valued by colleagues and clients alike. As a brand that prides itself on being people-focused both in terms of how we support individuals, professionally and personally, we’ve nothing but respect for our team. We show this through a number of programmes that give individuals the opportunity to shine and to be recognised by their peers, whether this be in our monthly newsletter, social posts specific to individuals or teams, long-service awards or exam congratulations. Above all, we’re always here to listen, help and support our people, and actively encourage everyone to reach out with thoughts, feelings and ideas in confidence - whether it’s your direct line manager, a member of the senior leadership team or our People team. We’d like to thank you once again for sharing your own thoughts and would welcome further discussion around any of the points raised.
