Executive Staff - Bully pulpit

Pros

Everyone below the level of Director is carrying the organization and are subjected to abuse by HR and one Senior Exec who has no idea how to communicate openly; dictates and is an over glorified copy editor whose paid over $175k

Cons

Senior VPs - toxic, along with HR - they have no sense of what the programs do, and they do not know ethics. They allow abusive managers to remain employed and they are not above letting the abusive to enter into the area of retaliation and complicity. Execs, mainly one Senior Level VP walks out of meetings, is hostile and is a bureaucrat who acts as a buffer between staff and the new President. Rather than openness, she allows for zero dialogue and works behind the scenes to undermine the work of those beneath her. The new President has no idea how abusive his senior staff is and has been to the point of the use of the position as a bully pulpit - dishonest, unethical and no transparency.

Systemic abuse on MENA team

Pros

Freedom House is made up of passionate and devoted staff who work tirelessly for minimal compensation to foster human rights world wide.

Cons

The MENA team has a history of systemic abuse that creates a hostile work environment. Although the under staffing fosters learning, the management routinely relys on abusive management tactics that do not lead to professional growth or strong performance. I would not advise joining the MENA team.

Awful management.

Pros

There's great work going on at FH and staff are extremely knowledgeable/qualified in their respective fields. Most people around you are really driven by the mission.

Cons

The new President, Mark Lagon, is absolutely horrendous. Terrible leader, blatantly self-promoting, arrogant, and cares more about his title than the mission. His strategic planning process seemed to be "for-show" and I suspect that he will pursue his own ideas and ignore others. I left before I could find out. Run away. This place is plummeting towards the ground.
