Pros

1. If you want to make more money in this hospital the only was is to pick up extra shifts . There are tons of opportunities because they are SUPER short staffed 2. Some good charge nurses would help you throughly when you need help but don’t get excited becoz charge nurse also need to take patient care ! They are short 3. Your HMO and EPO plan are free . If you are not picky and healthy and married with children, this could save you money compared to other hospital but remember the salary is low in gmc

Cons

# Staffing Shortages: Garfield Medical Center faces significant staffing shortages in all units . This results in the need to transfer patients out of the ICU faster than recommended, which can impact patient care. There is one day they transferred a patient who had open brain surgery to Tele floor ( stay in icu for about 24 hr) 2 hours later, pt code blue. 2. Even though the EPO and HMO plans are free but the pay is not fair. As an current employee with 3 years of experience, the pay is 46.12 while other hospital starting pay is 46 for new grads. #Charge Nurse Responsibilities: The charge nurses often find themselves taking on patient care responsibilities due to understaffing, which can be overwhelming and affect their ability to manage the unit effectively. And you could be senior nurse if you stay more than 6 months . With 1 year of experience they will ask you to be charge nurse. I personally refused many times because who would sign up to be charge to do double job while getting paid 46.12. charge nurses also take full patients care while you are being change . It is overwhelming #Pharmacy Delays: The pharmacy at Garfield Medical Center can take an extended amount of time (1-2 hours) to prepare important drips, such as the stat order for amiodarone drip required for open-heart surgery. The lengthy preparation time can be critical when patients require timely care. #Communication During Time Off: Nurses often receive calls on their days off or during vacation due to the hospital's staffing challenges. This constant demand can disrupt personal time and work-life balance. #Medication Delivery System: The hospital lacks an efficient medication delivery system, requiring nurses to leave patient care to retrieve medications. This inefficient process can delay patient care and impact overall efficiency. FYI : you have to call pharm ask if the medication is ready or not, even if it’s ready they won’t remind you , you have to call and ask. When you go to pharmacy, the medication just lied on the cart. # if you decide to help with the shortage, don’t listen to nursing op and don’t trust becoz they never keep their promise. You sign up to help your own floor only to find out you need to float to other floors Jen you come to work . The unexpected floating is stressful especially during the middle of the shift.

Pros

Some of the staffs are very nice and willing to help each other

Cons

The hospital experiences a high turnover rate, with many registry nurses receiving easier cases due to their unfamiliarity with the charting system and environment. Consequently, full-time staff members often find themselves handling more challenging patients. Within 6-12 months, one can easily become the most senior nurse, resulting in the assignment of high-acuity cases, even without receiving adequate training. Charge nurses tend to make assignments based on favoritism rather than the patients' acuity levels. Night shifts suffer from a shortage of resources, leading to frequent missed meals and breaks. Additionally, monitors and equipment frequently malfunction, for example, computer batteries to be changed up to five times per shift. These issues divert attention away from patient care. House supervisors consistently push for admissions and assignment changes, potentially resulting in unexpected floating to different unit in the middle of the shift. The working environment lacks friendliness, with occurrences of doctors and fellow nurses raising their voices. Surprisingly, even secretaries and schedulers also yell at nurses, indicating a lack of mutual respect among staff members.

Better Than Expected Community Hospital in the Chinese Ghetto

Pros

Staff are friendly for the most part. It has a feeling of family and everyone knows everyone. Senior Administrative management is hands on and approachable. They really have the desire to make the hospital a better place and to service their community. Nurses are nice and do their best as they are overworked. Great place to come if you are ethnic-Asian, Hispanic as you will have staff reflecting your ethnicity and language skills. The cafe also serves Asian cuisine that is above average for your typical hospital. The only hospital around that will hire RNs with no experience. Great place to get experience because the caseload is varied and intense at times and you're in a fast-pased center.

Cons

Physicians-many are a little too focused on monetary gain and forget the mores of why they entered the helping profession. Some will will refuse to treat you or offer you subpar service if you lack the high yield insurances such as private or Medicare. There have been complaints that a few will even order unnecessary tests to bill insurance. Psychiatrists are not good at treating patients with psychiatric diagnoses. The hospital in general is weak in mental health.
