Pros
I recently went through an intense journey during my time at Gather. While the experience wasn't without challenges, I can't deny the valuable lessons I've learned. This review aims to provide an honest reflection on my time at the company. I joined Gather with high hopes and enthusiasm. However, I faced a range of difficulties that tested my resilience. After my departure, I've had the opportunity to reflect on these experiences and gain insights that I believe can contribute to the growth and improvement of the company.
Cons
One aspect that stood out was the management style, particularly within my team. Micromanagement was prevalent, which created an atmosphere of restricted autonomy. This approach affected team dynamics and hindered innovation. Additionally, suggesting process improvements and department growth was met with resistance, and disciplinary action followed, which impacted my motivation and enthusiasm. Another challenge was the lack of proper training, especially within the website design team. The lack of comprehensive training hindered team members' ability to meet their job responsibilities fully. The shifting definitions of job titles and responsibilities compounded this challenge. Clear communication regarding expectations and roles could alleviate confusion during these transitions. The company's approach to technical challenges was to encourage employees to "just google it" and spend time researching issues independently. While self-reliance is important, a balance is needed to provide effective support for team members who may not be well-versed in specific technical areas. My experience could have been significantly improved with a more supportive and collaborative work environment. Despite the challenges, I have learned to advocate for myself, communicate more effectively, and seek professional growth opportunities.
