Pros

Being a Groundspeak employee is a wonderful opportunity with competitive salary and well above average healthcare and benefits. There are several catered meals, fresh fruits and veggies, some frozen entrees and just about every snack and drink you can imagine. This includes an in-house espresso machine and a kegerator. You could easily eat 2 or 3 meals a day at Groundspeak plus happy hour, if you wanted to take full advantage of the food/drink.

Cons

It's been a challenge to find and retain people that truly fit in. There have been several middle/top tier managers who have turned out to be counter-culture and have taken their toll on the overall morale. These people eventually work their way out of the organization or are asked to leave, but sometimes the damage left behind leaves a sense that something could have been done sooner. As someone else mentioned, "good work and hard work are not rewarded as much as they should be". My understanding of this is that the opinions about someone could overshadow their actual output and performance. This subjective over objective dilemma has been seen a few times and makes it appear that being likable is more important than doing your job.

Pros

They're good folks. Solid intentions, strong product adoption, excellent in office perks. They might not be able to put the "golden handcuffs" on you, but they certainly try to offer you an earthy brass or copper set. Retirement plan. Excellent Healthcare. Reasonable deadlines. Great optimistic people. Smart folks. An engineer's dream.

Cons

You'll quickly realize that everyone in management has been there 10+ years. "Great! They have created a culture that manages to retain it's talent" you'll think. And it is good, but now try to move up. Where will you go when your boss wrote the legacy code you're trying to maintain? Further more why are you still maintaining this pile of VB? What happened? I came here to make games and get outdoors, not update a 2005 codebase. Come here to retire comfortably, not build your career.

Pros

Geocaching has amazing benefits, perks, and work/life balance. When you work there, you feel good about what you're doing with your life, that you're not just putting some "widget" out into the world that doesn't really matter. You're putting people in touch with nature, creativity, and a worldwide community.

Cons

I found my time at the company to be bittersweet for reasons that are difficult to put my finger on. The pay for anyone who's not a developer is low—like 25% lower than the going rate in Seattle (in the end I was interviewing for similar roles and they all had a muuuuuuch higher starting pay), and there's little room for career advancement. There were odd office politics that left me and many others perplexed and frustrated. But the odd thing is, people at Geocaching genuinely care about how things are going, but not much is really done to concretely address ongoing issues. I love the idea of "playing where you work", but in the end I wished Geocaching rolled up their sleeves and completed long over-due features, projects, and parity between the website and the app. I also wish they dealt with interpersonal issues more directly and swiftly.
