Pros

Nice work environment with generally dedicated colleagues. People care about the overall mission of the University. Department is close-knit group of friends.

Cons

Overworked and underpaid compared to the vast majority of colleagues. Administration has inconsistent focus on marketing and financial bottom-line; on the one hand the low student-faculty ratio is touted while its labeled as unsustainable internally.

Unethical Place to work

Pros

My experience at GFU was that there was a lot of unethical behavior that would not occur at other institutions, even secular ones. People in leadership and management roles are allowed to treat their employees in very poor and ungodly fashion. It is well known that the administration is aware of these issues and yet does very little about it. When "whistle-blowers" bring this up to either HR or administration, they are treated as insubordinate complainers. It seems that that senior management doesn't want to be bothered with middle manager's incompetencies and unethical behavior and so hide behind the "Christian" attitude of offering grace and forgiveness. However, this same attitude is not extended to the lower level employees.

Cons

As an older man, I can say that GFU is one of the most sexist environments I have ever worked in. Women have been routinely let go for offenses that men are able to get away with. Women are expected to be quiet, demure, and cheerfully pleasant at all times. Being conventional leaders and outspoken is not tolerated from women. I have observed many good employees quit because they were so discouraged and disillusioned by their experience of working there. I have even observed people leave the faith because of how they were treated by the Christian leadership of GFU.

Pros

The faculty of George Fox University excel at their jobs. As is typical of small, private schools, they are there to teach and mentor students. That is their desire. Students receive an excellent education from dedicated faculty.

Cons

It is said, it's not what you know but who you know. In my almost 30 years in education, this has never been more obvious than at George Fox University. Unqualified, under-educated people are routinely hired and promoted at this school. As a result, there is a level of incompetence that I have not seen elsewhere. The administration has also fallen victim to surrounding itself with people who refuse to tell them they wear no clothes. Surprisingly, I do not think this has yet to affect the quality of education that students receive. It has affected the quality of the work place for many hard-working, dedicated employees. There is a lot of inequality and little transparency. For a Christian organization, there is also a lot of questionable actions by people in leadership.
