Some Departments are great....others are awful

Pros

You really do feel like you are making a difference at times. It looks awesome on a resume, and you have the opportunity to meet some great connections. Career opportunities aren't great at the Capitol, but you can move to other state agencies or become a lobbyist. Some departments offer telework days during the interim, and everyone works short hours during the interim.

Cons

Some departments (House Research for example) are absolutely fantastic with great leadership. Other departments have very poor leadership and communication, with inexperienced leaders who were just appointed by their buddies. If you end up in one of the later departments, you will feel like you aren't trusted or valued. It is extremely political (in not the right way) and cliquey. There is a lot of gossip and some are manipulative in tearing others down to build themselves up. Those that "play the game" are rewarded, while those that quietly do their job and stay out of drama become irrelevant and invisible. Innovation is also stifled, because of bureaucracy, distrust, and bosses who are scared you might show them up.

Pros

Having some type of effect on policy that affects so many people is a truly rewarding experience. Additionally you get to enjoy working with a number of people who enjoy making a difference.

Cons

There is a lot of work for four months of the year, and then it is dead. Also, the work that you do in the session is not necessarily going to have any end effect, but that is to be understood when you take a job in research.

Pros

This is a great place to build a strong foundation for policy, leadership, and communications skills. Great place to build a strong network.

Cons

Lower pay - much lower than state agencies.
