"Worst Job Ever"

Pros

I learned: 1.) how much sleep deprivation a person can endure before they smarten up and leave the company 2.) the true meaning of being an indentured servant 3.) what NOT to look for in your next job 4.) how much effort it takes to do the job of 3 people at once

Cons

You can only write down so many but here goes: -Not paid on time ever or at all. I tried to get my paychecks from Mr. Fenton for some time and they were sent back to me unsigned, and thus, I couldn't get paid because the business isn't legitimate enough to offer direct deposit. -The "CEO" was dishonest, condescending and enjoyed throwing temper tantrums that involved screaming at and demeaning employees (oh, sorry "INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS" who work round the clock 7 days a week) on a regular basis. Downright unprofessional and manic. -I once had a soda thrown at me and it almost fried my computer (you guessed it I bought this computer not the company). -You will be blamed for mistakes other people make that are completely out of your control. -Turnover rate is so high because no one can stand the working conditions. The company has a history of people simply walking out and being threatened with "legal action" for breaking "contract". Which if you actually have a lawyer read it is completely bogus - you can't force someone to work for you for a year just because. -You work in a basement. -You work with Mr. Fenton and he basically owns you, your time, your sanity and oh, yeah the money he owes you while blaming you for all of his bad decisions (i.e. the company). -You work with Mr. Fenton. -THE KICKER: You're promised a wealth of experience in a field that is exciting and interesting and really you're just being taken advantage of by someone who doesn't appreciate or care about the amount of effort you put forward. All that matters is how many people share the click-bait on social media and that the company gets noticed.

Tin Pot Dictatorship

Pros

Even for the low pay, this could have been an enjoyable and informative job, if it wasn't for the person in charge. The other employees were nice.

Cons

Sketchiest job experience ever! Do your research before you apply, especially on CEO Josh Fenton. During the interview the Mr. Fenton, went out of his way to tell me "don't worry, you won't be a slave or anything", which is... a pretty major red flag. He also was very illusive about paperwork. He even changed my job description AFTER I had accepted the job, and the salary of the original job posting was not what I was offered. Mr. Fenton has no real background in journalism. He has set himself up as the dictator of this news site and cycles through interns and young reporters because nobody else would tolerate such a job. This means he also has no idea about the appropriate role of an editor, and if he catches anything he needs to edit, he will use it as an opportunity to demean you (the exact opposite of what an editor is supposed to do). The journalist/editor relationship is poisoned from day one, the work environment gets completely silent and even hostile the second he enters the room. Eventually all his employees walk out. He also doesn't remember the things he says, so he may get upset at you for following the very instructions he gives you! I once saw him bring an employee outside and yell at him because he turned around in his chair to participate in a conversation. Worst of all, he didn't pay me for months after I left, and every time I emailed him he'd invent some new excuse, grovelling and weaseling in an attempt to make me wait a few weeks longer. Eventually I threatened to go to the labor bureau and (surprise!) the check arrived in a matter of days. Do yourself a favor and look up the reputation of GoLocal and Mr. Fenton before you apply. Look up the failures of "GoLocalPDX" and how he didn't pay several employees. Look up "GoLocalProv Turtleboy" and see how he threatens to sue former employees.

Pros

Really the only pros were getting the chance to write big-time news and investigations. And that certainly is a big pro

Cons

However in this case the coms certainly outweigh the pros. I still am chasing down money from Mr. Fenton, and he was nothing but rude and dishonest during my time there. There is also no downtime. Fenton owns you while you there, and your phone and laptop must be on hand at all times-whether its the weekend, you're on vacation, or anything else
