Pros

Casual attire, dog friendly office, parties, bonuses at Christmas or when kpi goals are hit, fully stocked kitchen, meditation, cross fit, clean bathrooms, flexible hours.

Cons

When you land a job at Golden Hippo, you honestly feel like you hit the job search jackpot, for the first 6 months or so. Then the reality hits you: the reality that as a woman you'll never move up as quickly or get paid as much as your male peers who have been there the same length of time as you. The reality that management does not have your back, nor do they even want to get to know you. The reality that fancy parties and intention bracelets, a fully stocked kitchen and cross fit classes are only there to distract you from the fact that they would rather compensate with fancy perks than an actual decent paying wage. The reality that time off is non existent, and if you do take time off for legitimate reasons such as illness, you'll still be treated as if you went to the Bahamas to do blow for a week. The reality that as hard as this company attempts to brainwash you into thinking you are an asset, they can't conceal their true greedy nature. The job isn't about you or your growth potential , it's about selling placebos to people and making billions of dollars doing it. This company is not above the lowest of the low of marketing tactics. This company won't fire men who harass women on the daily, or talk to their employees like scum regardless of gender. I made this company tons of money and still got fired, don't be fooled. You're not an asset, you're a pawn.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I am sorry to hear that you had such a negative experience. The vast majority of our employees are very happy here, well beyond the six-month mark you mentioned. And the reason is not just the many perks the employees enjoy. Golden Hippo is a fast-paced, results-driven company. Our work environment is relaxed, yet highly productive. Hippos thrive here, and the whole company with them. However, we do understand this environment is not a good fit for everybody. Golden Hippo has some of the most talented women onboard. From the VP of Product Development, to the VP of Copywriting, the Director of IT, Director of Supply Chain, Director of Talent Acquisition & Development, all three senior remote HR Managers and so on, women have risen to the most influential positions within the company. Their contributions are key to our success, and like all other Hippos, women are the creators of their own success. Forbes magazine even awarded us “Company Where Women Most Like to Work”. Like our many perks and facilities, our compensation and PTO packages are above average. Our passion to create best-in-class products with the assistance of some of the most renown doctors in their fields, coupled with our exceptional employees, is just one of the reasons we continue our meteoric growth year after year after year. We wish you the best in the next step of your career, and we thank you for your time and energy at Golden Hippo.

Boys club breeds a culture of insecurity

Pros

fully paid health insurance, fitness classes, free food, casual dress, over-the-top parties

Cons

The culture at Golden Hippo is perhaps the most detrimental aspect of working there. It's very unprofessional at all levels, and terrible, disgusting behavior simply goes unchecked. Women do not support one another, which creates a culture of cliques, gossip, and trash talking. Some women are downright rude and disrespectful when interviewing candidates. The fact that it's a boy's club is likely what creates a heightened sense of insecurity there for everyone, not just women. I once asked an employee to show me how to do something, and he was so intimidated that he made me feel like a complete idiot and even insulted me. Men are also wildly insecure there. While the healthcare benefits are excellent, the PTO policy is ancient (10 days). There's also no work from home policy (they're openly against it), yet certain employees get to regularly work from home whenever they want. It's unfair that certain employees make their own rules no matter what the policy is, and it goes overlooked due to favoritism. Imagine the frustration of trying to talk to an employee in-person to solve a pressing issue only to find they're working from home that day and are harder to track down, when it's been made known that it's not allowed. It makes upper management look sloppy and can cause resentment among employees. Overall, it's a sink-or-swim kind of place where the only thing that matters is the company's bottom line, no matter how much progress you've made or the amount of work you've put in. Over the course of a year, I saw around 15 people get fired and even entire departments at the drop of a hat. Unless you're personally making a lot of money for the company, it's hard to feel secure.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write us a review about your experience at Golden Hippo. We are happy to hear that you appreciate our company benefits and events. Yeah, our parties are a lot of fun. We are sorry to hear your experience with the culture and fellow coworkers wasn’t great. We’ve seen it in a few cases; Golden Hippo is not a perfect fit for everybody. We have purposely created a flat organization where people are granted lots of space to be creative and bring the best of themselves to work. We are data and results driven. There is little hand holding and no micromanaging. We can see how this may create uneasiness. Some people do better in structured environments while others thrive in ecosystems like ours. The people that do make it here actually love the company. As recent as May 2018, we were ranked tied for first place for Best Culture for companies of all sizes in Los Angeles by Comparably, ahead of companies as big as ZipRecruiter; and we ranked first place on Companies for Women in Los Angeles according to the same survey. Thank you for the feedback on the vacation days. We actually looked into this, and you are right. I’m happy to tell you that we made a change to our PTO policy. Effective October 8th, vacation days for new hires will jump from 10 to 15 days per year. Thanks for pointing this out. Thank you again for your review. And thanks for you time at Golden Hippo. We wish you the best in the next chapter of your career.

Walked out the first day

Pros

Seems like they treat their employees well. The location and working hours were so ideal and the pay was just on the low end of average.

Cons

If a customer is dumb enough to think he can lose weight by eating a spinach pill, that's on him. But insinuating that a vitamin prevents autism? That is beyond reproach. It was upsetting to walk away from a brand new full-time job on the first day, but I have never regretted it.

Hello, my name is Stephen and I'm the Senior Copy Editor here at Golden Hippo Media. I’d like to thank you for providing us with your feedback. I’m truly sorry that you had a negative experience here at Golden Hippo Media. I would like to clarify some errors within your review, so that others may have an accurate depiction of the work we do here and our company culture. First, we do not sell "spinach pills" as weight-loss aids. But more importantly, we have never "insinuated that a vitamin prevents autism." This is patently untrue. This claim has never appeared in any of our published copy at any point in time. We genuinely care about all of our customers, and take great pride in the work we do here and would never mislead customers in any way. Moreover, we do not claim or imply that any of our products function as a cure for any disease. We carefully review any and all claims to make sure they conform to legal standards and that they are true to the product. I hope this helps to clarify any inaccurate description you have of Golden Hippo Media, and we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
