Pros

- Great location - Nice restaurants nearby - Parking

Cons

Where do I start? - not allowed Wi-Fi access - not allowed to charge your phone anywhere - "personal browsing" is frowned upon, even just checking your gmail, which is mainly what I got fired for - only 30 minutes for lunch (but I always took an hour anyway and no one noticed) - low pay - expensive insurance - micromanagement - nepotism (one of my co workers was my supervisor's brother, and the CEO straight up told me in a lunch that he got his first promotion when he married the boss' daughter and that he hired some of his in-laws) The culture is too conservative and outdated. And your coworkers will snitch on you for the dumbest things and they are encouraged to do so. My manager straight up told me,"this is a conservative work environment and people are always watching you." You have 90 days to "prove yourself" or they will kick you out. Any small things they see they will write it down, date it, and discuss it with you in your quarterly meeting. The CEO walks around almost every morning and goes to everyone's desk to secretly check on them, under the guise of an innocent "Good Morning!". He passes by for 1.5 seconds and if he sees something he doesn't like, he will tell your manager/supervisor, who will then have a whole meeting with you about it. It's demoralizing, because my supervisor always praised my work for being well done and on time, so it was never my work or work ethic, i just couldn't blend in. Hard to blend in everyone is either old or white or both. Mostly both.

Pros

I really like my coworkers. Everyone is pleasant to work with. I get a lot of independence to work on my projects as I see fit. This job is a good way to learn about the industry. The work is interesting and varied. The company culture is overall positive, but pretty conservative. There is a lot of room to advance in the company as they like to "home grow" their editorial and production staff.

Cons

There is very little diversity here. The workforce is mostly white, which isn't reflective of the surrounding area (Chicago suburbs). There seems to be a big divide in compensation between upper management and the "worker bees." I know most of us make below the national average as far as salary goes. Employees are not rewarded for outstanding work, and people are able to coast by and get the same raises as those who work harder. Our health insurance is also really expensive, which makes it difficult if you are pregnant or have a chronic illness.

Pros

Many of the people in "worker bee" positions really care about the product and the customer. Management, not so much.

Cons

Communication is abysmal and achieving specified goals does not insure long term employment. The management can love you one minute and want you gone the next. They believe in family, as in hiring their family - nepotism is rampant throughout with Senior Managers supervising their wives and brother-in-law's.... be very wary here. The pay isn't great and the benefits are horrible. If you take a job here, get your experience and start looking for your next landing spot quickly.
