Prepare to be criticized all the time

Pros

Fair compensation, good benefits, smart colleagues

Cons

Goodwater has a leadership and culture problem. All I ever hear is criticism and what's not going well. The 2 founders act like ADD tiger parents. They say our returns are good, but all I ever hear from them is things aren't good enough, pointing out random mistakes calling it "constructive feedback". No one ever says good job unless it's sandwiched between more criticism, nothing's ever good enough. No one is happy here. The culture is very demotivating.

Stress beyond belief

Pros

Most of the team (down from the leadership) is down to earth and friendly. The office in Burlingame is nice

Cons

Where to start? First of all, even though Goodwater is almost 10 years along, it's very chaotic and feels like a new company (in a bad way). Priorities change all the time, and I have no idea what's going on. Everything happens in a black box. All the major decisions are made by the 2 founders, who don't communicate with anyone. The leadership at Goodwater is really condescending and tyrannical. They're either completely unengaged (they're often not in the office, don't respond to emails and go MIA all the time) or micromanaging, depending on how important they think something is. No one likes talking to them. Everyone is talked down to, as if we're children. We're all underpaid. Everyone I know who quit and got other offers were paid 2x or more what they made here. Some people get "carry", which is like a stock option for a VC, but the partners get almost all of it, leaving scraps for everyone else. We're overworked too. Everyone's expected to be on call 24/7, and there are urgent fire drills constantly. All of the old timers quit: the original CTO, VP of Engineering, VP of Data, head of HR, COO, and most of the investors. I heard a lot of them were fed up and stressed out. That should tell you something.

Pros

Interesting problems to work on, exposure to startups

Cons

Micromanaging, inconsistent and unclear expectations. Lots of hand waving and rushed code. Very pressured and tense atmosphere hidden behind a layer of false camaraderie.
