Was a mission-focused institution, hopefully it will get back to that

Pros

Middle management and junior faculty are mission-driven, smart, and collaborative. The university serves a vital function in the state and long-time employees stay because of it. Middle management (director-level) try to be flexible and provide professional development.

Cons

Salaries are lower and benefits are set by the State, which means they aren't great. Newest senior leadership (minus Provost) are self-centered and over-paid. State underfunding means you need to negotiate for as high a salary as possible or you may get stuck with minimal increases until you go for a new job.

Pros

Students, schedule, kind and caring staff. The mission is amazing.

Cons

Does not pay wages that remotely keep up with inflation (long term issue). In addition to COLAs, meaningful raises are far and few. We have instructors and staff making slightly more than student workers. Why? The county/state is raising the minimum wage and they are forced by law to pay the student workers more. Administrators somehow manage to get COLA's and raises though. Not sure I could sleep at night taking a raise while my staff get little to nothing...but I guess that is just me.

Pros

Working at a public university, help to give students from less privileged backgrounds an opportunity to grow and succeed, and you meet a lot of people who really care about the mission. It is a tight-knit culture that brings opportunities, arts, and culture to the Southland. There are also many opportunities to attend interesting events and learn about faculty research.

Cons

With the lack of financial resources for public universities, it is challenging to find the budget to attract and retain students and alumni donors. It is also a place where burnout is a very real risk because the need is so high and the resources are so low. It is challenging to be newer to the workforce in that environment because processes are not documented and there is too much reactivity to take time for training. The tight-knit "we're a family" culture can also be very cliquish at times.
