Pros

Gryphon was an amazing first job. The company is small so you know literally everyone, from the other RAs to the owner, and don't have to deal with really any bureaucracy. Some of the projects are fascinating and not the kind of stuff that you'll get to work on at many other companies. The work is also challenging (you're often trying to answer questions that have never been answered before) which was frustrating at times but definitely improved my critical thinking skills significantly. Work-life balance is great; I don't think I ever worked over 40 hrs/wk while I was there. The people are all super smart and supportive which makes going to work each day enjoyable. Turnover is really low, especially among senior employees, so you can find some really good long-term mentors.. And there are office dogs that are very cute and friendly!

Cons

The pay could be... better. Especially since most younger employees live in DC, it was challenging to both live in the city and save much money while working at Gryphon. A lot of what you're doing, especially as an RA, is literature-based research which means lots of searching on PubMed and reading articles. Some people love this but it wasn't an ideal working situation for me. Although there is career progression for someone with just a bachelors, and no explicit requirement for an advanced degree, the majority of the senior people have PhDs or Master's degrees. It seemed to me that I'd have to stay at Gryphon for 7-10 years to take on a more managerial role without getting an advanced degree first. I also felt that the organization was already a little top-heavy.

Pros

It is a small company so the actual people you work with will make or break if you like working here. There are some really great people with interesting backgrounds and expertise. Sometimes people get to travel which is neat, BUT the process for booking and extending your stay to take a couple extra days isn’t straightforward. So basically you get to see nice hotels in different countries if you travel. Some good benefits- they pay your healthcare premium which is super nice.

Cons

There are lots of extremely arrogant and toxic people that if you are unfortunate to be on a project with, will make you hate your life. Unfortunately, because it is such a small company, these people are often described as “indispensable” (which someone’s boss actually told me when I brought up a serious issue). I’ve recently been able to attend some client meetings to take notes, and realized that some of these toxic people (senior level) are actually just taking credit for other peoples work (the same people they talk to like they are idiots). I will say that this is not everyone, not even most people at Gryphon. But even having one person like this is enough to make you really hate your job. The company also undervalues soft skills. Training of personnel managers and project managers is not seen as a priority. Personally, I think this is because there are a lot of highly skilled hard-science people: which from my experience I have found think they don’t need or can figure out soft skills on their own (e.g., an engineer thinks they are smart enough to learn psychology but not the other way around). This attitude is consistent even across more technical areas (eg someone with a background in public health leading a risk assessment on cybersecurity). This leads to an ego-driven and insecure environment. Pay for junior staff is atrocious. All in all from my experience - gryphon is great if you are coming in at a more senior level. At the junior level, maybe for a year to open up job opportunities in the biodefense space, but if I could do it all over again I wouldn’t have stayed as long as I have. If you have another job offer I would strongly recommend taking it.
