Pros

Great people, decent perks, and been around a long time. Really one of the best employee experiences I’ve ever had.

Cons

In the last couple of years Guru has tried pivot after pivot to no effect. The company has been around for 10 years and had a great product focused on specific roles. The pivot to trying to serve the entire company (then HR, then back to the entire company) kind of destroyed momentum and it has struggled to find product market fit since then. Endless experiments with pricing, messaging, positioning, and more with little to no effect. There have been multiple rounds of layoffs since 2020, all blamed on the macro environment with not enough introspection. I used to really appreciate the amount of transparency all employees had into the state of the business, but that dried up in the last couple of years too (or we were told things were relatively stable when they weren’t).

Pros

Guru fosters a collaborative environment with some of the brightest minds I've encountered in my career. The company culture prioritizes both professional growth and personal well-being, creating a healthy work-life balance for employees. Despite ongoing product direction discussions, the CEO's leadership and unwavering dedication inspire confidence in Guru's ability to compete in the AI-driven knowledge management landscape.

Cons

During my time at Guru, the company's product direction and vision seemed to shift frequently, making it unclear who the ideal customer was. The knowledge management space has become crowded, with many companies (including Guru, Notion, and Glean) adding AI features. This saturation may make it difficult for Guru to stand out. Over the past two years, there has been a decrease in transparency from leadership. This, combined with the five rounds of layoffs (despite reassurances that they wouldn't happen again), has eroded trust within the company.

Pros

It's fun to work at Guru. Getting to contribute to such an awesome knowledge management product and building out AI capabilities is super fun. The people ops team have been very creative in holding remote team building events, like cooking classes, virtual concerts, crafting, cocktail making, etc. It's amazing to see how people are still highly engaged and connected after over a year of remote work. But the most special thing about Guru is its genuine, nurturing culture. From leadership to management to coworkers, people at Guru care about professional and personal growth. People are authentically interested in learning and growing. When mistakes/conflicts happen, there's no blame game, only intentional learning from them. Guru also cares about our well being. We've had many company-wide 4-day weekends since the pandemic, and very often we get reminded to take time off for ourselves.

Cons

As is common with startups, the company went through a shift in direction last year, including personnel changes. The company is at a great place right now, and Guru has always been and still is a great place to work at, but it is not immune to the growing pains of a young company.
