Pros

There can be opportunities at Habitat if you can put yourself in the right position but it comes with a risk that you can manage yourself out of a job by gaining too much experience with no personal development to keep you in the company.

Cons

There is an enormous disconnect between senior management and the rest of the business which causes severe and mostly avoidable difficulties in day-to-day operations and project work. Sadly even the launch of normal events such as promotions doesn't go off without something going wrong with the immediate reaction being one emotionally driven and blame orientated rather than engaged in critical thinking and analysis. These responses are typically the result of a lack of knowledge by senior-level colleagues on how basic operational processes or business tools work, and sadly lessons are rarely learnt. The need to launch the latest gimmick supercedes any efforts to reflect upon and improve standard day-to-day operations, and as a result, junior colleagues are often overworked, undervalued and lack support in developing themselves. There is no real HR representative in the office, and this lack of a support structure means colleagues have no advocates to encourage best practice or personal development and dangerous and irresponsible behaviours have developed as a result. This includes examples of colleagues not being able to attend medical appointments or not being allowed to take a sufficient amount of days off for procedures or when severely ill. This also means that there is no induction program and new colleagues are in charge of their own hardware and software requisitions and can spend weeks or even months trying to get themselves fully operational. You'll also find a high risk in new additions to the office finding themselves socially isolated as they aren't well introduced to the office and there are rarely opportunities to mix between departments. It's not uncommon for juniors to go months without annual leave for fear that something might go wrong in their absence and no one will be able to resolve it. There is an odd haze of secrecy at Habitat, and this includes specific instructions that any departures in the business are not to be discussed and project work conducted by one department may significantly impact two or three others, but they won't be informed of this until after completion. The clearest example of Habitat's working practices is its recent changes in couriers, storage facility and business system all at once and you'll see the results on any social media platform.
